A family moved into an old mansion in England. The house needed repairs, so the parents were always busy. Their little daughter, Emma, spent most of her time in the attic.
When the repairs were done, Emma's mother wanted to spend time with her. But Emma kept sneaking away.
"Why do you go there?" her mother asked.
"I'm playing with the boy," Emma said.
At first, her parents thought she was imagining things. But when she kept saying it, her father became suspicious.
He asked the locals about the mansion. They told him a family had lived there long ago. They had three children. The youngest was an idiot boy, and his parents never loved him. One day, his cap was found floating in the river. People said he had drowned.
But something felt wrong.
The father asked Emma, "Where does the boy come from?"
Emma pointed at a wall in the attic. "From here," she said.
The father looked closely. The wall was new, while the others were old. He knew they had never repaired the attic because it wasn't needed. Something was hidden.
He called workers to break the wall.
Behind it, they found a skeleton. His brass-buttoned jacket was still on him. But he had not drowned.
The boy's skull was broken. The examiner confirmed the truth—he had been struck with a heavy metal object.
