"Haha wow Romeo is like a love guru! Look at the way he describes his love for Rosaline! If the Rosaline chick at least gave him a chance..." Demetri fawned over Romeo's monologue.
"Are you kidding me? It's soo cheesy. All he's talking about is her looks, beauty and oh, more of her appearance! I mean I love Shakespeare but really he got it wrong here. I mean is that all guys think about? And really if a girl doesn't like you then you should just suck it up and move on and stop sounding so desperate, " I started ranting like a rapid train whizzing by.
Demetri stared at me. I think he was stunned. Also, I didn't think of it at first, but on hindsight, that last part could have just as well been an indirect jab at him.
"I-"
"Okay class let's share what you've been discussing. I've heard a lot of interesting comments...let's start with the first part of the scene..." Miss Kathryn cut Demetri off before he could respond.
Ashleigh was one of the few that was chosen to share her understanding and perspectives of the scene.
"...Oh and erm there's this oxymoron in this part where Sampson said he'd be civil with the maids. But he was totally contradicting himself because he wanted to chop their heads off? It shows how the violence amongst their masters is passed down to them," Ashleigh suggested, uncertainly.
I started chuckling to myself. Demetri shot me a puzzled look.
"Erm yes well...not exactly Ashleigh. For those of you that are confused about what that means please turn to the next page, there is a footnote on that part..." Miss Kathryn answered awkwardly.
Most of the class had turned to the footnote and the class burst into a roar of laughter.
"Yes yes settle down! Anyways, Ashleigh was right in that we sure do get a sense of their masters' resentment trickling down to even their servants, don't we?" Miss Kathryn added trying to cover up for Ashleigh. The laughing subsided but Ashleigh's face was still as red as a tomato.
She looked at me and I sticked my tongue out at her. She rolled her eyes as Miss Kathryn continued with the lesson.
So various other people shared their opinions on the portrayal of the servants and how the feud affected them and Miss Kathryn added her own literary context and analysis to make the discussion more fruitful. I was still writing some notes from the discussion before Miss Kathryn decided to move on to the next part of the scene.
"Layla, how about you start us off? I heard some passionate opinions about what you though of this part," she called me out, adding a chuckle at the end.
My cheeks immediately turned a tinge of rose upon hearing her comment. I didn't realize she was listening.
Ashleigh looked at me and this time it was her turn to stick out her tongue at me. (I know, how mature of us.)
I rolled my eyes at her and stood up to give my opinion anyways, of course in a less harsh way because Miss Kathryn had already heard enough of just pure ranting.
"And you're not entirely off the mark there. Romeo is rather melodramatic in this scene..." she went on in a detail analysis of Romeo's description pointing out how it was a Petrarchan poem and all.
Have I ever mentioned how I love it when people are so adroit in analysing a piece of writing? It was no wonder I could never cease to be in awe by Miss Kathryn's detailed analysis. Compared to what she was teaching, my rant seemed well...childish. Which to be honest, it really was. I didn't know why I was so riled up anyways. Well I think I know why but I'd hate myself if I told myself it was true...
The sound of the bell ringing stopped me from getting lost in my memories. But it also brought me back to the reality of the situation. And the situation was that Demetri still looked like he wanted to talk to me.
"Hey, so about what Miss Kathryn told us to do-"
"Wait, what did she tell us to do?"
"We're supposed to go back home and form our own opinions based on our own experiences as well as others about love at first sight. Didn't you hear?" Demetri chuckled as he explained.
"Oh...I...must have missed it while I was taking down some notes..." I admitted, my cheeks turning red again.
"Yeah I was just wondering, what do you think? Do you believe in love at first sight?" Demetri just suddenly popped the question.
The question took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting that. I was actually thinking through my response so before I decided to stall instead.
"Why?"
"Because I think I do," Demetri confessed, adding a wink at the end.
I heard a gasp from afar. That sounded a lot like Ashleigh. I glanced in her direction and my actions mirrored her shock. My jaw had dropped. My eyes were wide. But only for a second.
"I don't think staring in the mirror counts," I quickly recovered.
"Oooooooooohhhh....apply cream to burnt area," Asher chimed in as he and Ashleigh walked towards me.
Ashleigh started laughing at this.
"Good one Lyles," she added.
"Bye Shay," Demetri laughed as he casually dismissed mine and Asher's teasing, acting almost as if it never happened.
I rolled my eyes and walked out of the classroom with Asher and Ashleigh.
"So, eventful lesson with Angelos?" Asher piped.
"Not funny Asher. Don't ever do that again!" I chided.
"Why? What is it with him that makes you so irritated anyways?" Ashleigh inquired.
"I'm surprised you're asking. Like you said, he's such a flirt. It's so gross. And he thinks he is so sure of himself when he does so too. Besides, he doesn't know when to turn it down a notch when a girl's not interested," I huffed.
"Ouch Shay. But it sounds right there you think I'm something like Romeo after all," Demetri interrupted our conversation out of nowhere. He feigned hurt as he walked past us but laughed a hearty laugh as he was walking further away. The guy seemed to be everywhere.
I groaned. "It's like he wanted to prove my point."
"Well, it sounded more like you proved his point. Do you like him Lyles?" Ashleigh teased.
"Shut up Ash," I curtly replied.
"There, there let's get to lunch. Maybe food will make you feel better," Asher tried to cheer me up, but the amused tone of his voice made it obvious to me he enjoyed my miserable exchange with Demetri.
"You're lucky you mentioned food because I'm still upset with you for starting all of this. Let's go you sadist," I responded sarcastically and laughed.
Asher and Ashleigh both joined me in laughing as we made our way to the cafeteria. Asher tried to make a jibe at my weight to which I did not appreciate and I dissed him back. A war of words then erupted as we were trying to one-up each other, Ashleigh cracking up at the ridiculousness of it all.
