Yuri had just moved to Wisconsin from Virginia. He didn't want to move and definitely didn't want to go to a new school. High school was hard enough but for Yuri it was even harder. His dad was from Russia and English was his second language. Even though he spoke English fluently he would constantly get made fun of and get called mean named. Being a Russian kid during the Cold War definitely didn't help the bullying. Eventually he just accepted it but starting at a new school would be way worse.
"Everyone this is Yuri Sokolov he just moved here from Virginia he just transferred today please give him a warm welcome.
"Great" Yuri thought "now I look like a communist even more" he sat down awkwardly in the nearest from seat. He kept his eyes on the board trying to listen to the lesson the teacher had begun teaching. Suddenly he heard a voice by his left ear
"So are you a commie?" The boy snickers. He expected that when moving to another school but not that quickly. Paying no attention to the rude comment he just brushed it off and kept on trying to listen to the teachers notes. A few minutes later he heard more snickers and he turned back to see a group of boys pointing and laughing at him. He quickly turned back around before staring at them for too long. He didn't want to get into any fights at this school or rather have anyone beat him up. He never fought back, he never had the courage to.
The bell finally rung and he got up so fast he almost fell over before practically running to the door and through the hallway. He didn't even have time to notice running into someone halfway to his class.
"Oh my god I'm so sorry I didn't mean to walk into you" he smiled nervously.
"It's fine" Yuri said quickly picking up his stuff and walking towards his next class. He could hear the guy behind him.
"Uhhhh okay?" He questioned to himself. Yuri finally got to his next class which seemed like forever and sat in his seat. The bell rang. As everyone was getting settled he heard his teacher speak. Oh no.
"We have a new student today! What's your name?" She asked.
"Umm...Yuri" he said quietly
"Well nice to meet you, Yuri hopefully your classes have been great so far!" She said a little bit too peppy. He already didn't like her.
"Uh yeah I guess so" he said quietly again. He just wanted this day to be over.
When he finally got through the first 5 classes it was lunch time. He finally had a beak to gather his thoughts and not socialize for a half an hour. He didn't even bother getting lunch because his stomach was too upset with the nerves from today. He sat against a wall in the corner of the lunch room reading a book that he never finished when he was back in Virginia. Reading was something that calmed him down. That and pottery. Unfortunately this school didn't have a pottery room like his last so he would just have to stick with reading.
Suddenly he saw a pair of feet in front of him. He looked up to see the pair of feet belonged to the boy he ran into in first period. He had dark hair with blonde highlights at the ends. He had glasses and was wearing jeans with a jean jacket and a stripped shirt with converse.
"Um hi, your the new kid I ran into going to second period right?" He smiled kindly. Yuri almost smiled back. Almost.
"Uh yeah I am, sorry about that by the way..." Yuri said
"Oh no no it's fine." The boy said with a brighter smile. "Uh mind if I sit?" He pointed to the wall next to Yuri.
"Uh sure" Yuri said.
The boy sat next to him almost shoulder to shoulder. Usually Yuri would keep his distance to anyone in school but he felt like this boy was different.
"I'm Charley by the way, what's your name?"
"Uh Yuri, my name is is Yuri"
"Well nice to meet you Yuri" Charley said
"Yeah nice to you too" Yuri said with a small smile.
