The date was September 21st, 1942, the day was warm, as it was 4:21 in the afternoon.
Kids were playing outside, parents and elders were chatting on their porches and on their lawn
chairs, playing music and watching the kids play. Hearing the waves hit the beach and tourists
surfing and building sand castles it felt like the perfect day out of the entire year. The past few
days Haylie and Taylor were playing in their playroom with the window open because of how
nice the fresh air felt.
As Bryan came home from the bank his face was beet red, he walked in the house,
slammed the door behind him, and rubbed his temples to try and calm himself down.
Afterwards Bryan took his coat and hat off and put it on the coat rack. Ophelia and
Bryan got into an argument about their financial problems and how Ophelia kept spending all of
their money when Bryan couldn’t get any more money out of his job, even though his job paid
$40 an hour to support her. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, Ophelia. You’ve spent Every,
Single, Penny, that I worked for. You have your own job, why aren’t you getting enough money?”
Ophelia went silent as tears started to form in her eyes. “My boss..” they went silent as tears
started forming in Opelias eyes. “your boss what Ophelia?” They fell silent again as Bryan
rubbed the bridge of his nose and wiped the sweat off of his head due to the warmth and the fact
he was wearing a coat just a few minutes prior. The time was 4:35 P.M. “he.. He doesn’t pay me.
Even though I work more than 40 hours a week. He doesn’t pay me. He says it's because ‘women don’t deserve to be paid’” they both went silent. They had their TV on the news channel station.
The words “We have some breaking news.” broke the silence between them. They both looked at
each other and then to the TV as the newscaster was fumbling, seemingly trying to avoid saying
something or trying to hold back fear. The time was 4:59 P.M.
“There is a bomb heading to Hawaii tomorrow. The US government has issued everyone
in Hawaii to evacuate. You will have exactly one day and four hours to do so.”
There was still, deafening silence and the newscaster started to sob. Ophelia looked at
Bryan worried that they wouldn’t have the funds to evacuate. “Bryan. What are we going to do?”
“We can't leave! We don’t have the money to afford the tickets!” Bryan looked calm. Too calm.
Bryan looked at Ophelia, with tears in his eyes he said, “we’ll have to stay here.” “What about
our babies Bryan?! They can’t die yet!--” “we will find someone to take them to America. And
we’ll make sure they can remember us by either photos or letters. If we want them to remember
us, we have to start now.”
Bryan wiped the tears from Ophelia's face as she wiped Bryan tears. The time was 5:56
P.M. They decided to go to their neighbors to ask them if they could take their two girls, Haylie
and Taylor, to America with them. “Hey Ophie! What brings ya’ over?” asked Jenny. Seeing that
she’d been crying Jenny let her come inside the house along with Bryan to know what was
happening. “I.. don’t.. Know what to do. We want our children to live their lives fully. So.. we
were wondering if you and Jack could take them with you to the US.” “absolutely! We’d love
to.” Bryan looked at Jenny and told her what their plan was and what they were going to do.
They both left with Jenny telling them to call her when they had the girls’ things together to pick them up. Ophelia wrote a letter saying;
“My dear children, we must tell you that we love you. We always have. I’m sorry that me
and your father can’t be with you guys as you grow and live your lives. We don’t have much time
left until the bomb hits Hawaii, but me and your father wanted to tell you that Jenny and Jack
will be your new parents. We love you, Haylie and Taylor, we really do. We don’t have enough
money for me and your father to leave, so we're letting you live your lives to the fullest in
America. Hope you guys are safe and happy. –love your mother, Ophelia.”
The time was 11:20
P.M.
They put their daughters' things into a suitcase and put the letter and photos in there too
along with their toys, blankets, clothes, some extra money to buy a new crib for them, and some
candy and formula. The time was 12:59 A.M. They went to sleep and got up extremely early to
give Jenny and Jack, Haylie and Taylors’ things. The time was 8:30 A.M. They all hugged and
wished each other farewell. The time was 6:59. Jenny and Jack left, while Ophelia and Bryan
stood there crying and hugging each other. They got dressed, went to the beach and held hands as
they watched the sun rise, and as tears streamed down their faces, and the bomb fell. The time
was 8:40 A.M. They saw the bright light, and the explosion. They turned to each other with tears
falling down their faces like rain, and kissed one final time. “I hope. In another life, we’ll meet
again.” “I’ll miss you Bryan. Let's hope we meet again. In another universe.” They hugged each
other and silently sobbed, as they knew their fate was about to come. As the atomic rays hit them
and they turned to radioactive dust. Their ashes danced in the radioactive wind and landed into a
heart, then blew away in the wind, lost forever, wishing they’d meet again in another life, and
hoping their children are safe. The time was 8:58 A.M, September 22nd, 1942, the morning was
awfully cold and partly cloudy. The only thing left of them were their engagement rings in the
sand, soon to be buried and lost until someone else finds them.
