Sia Verma had always believed in taking chances. Life, after all, had a way of surprising people when they least expected it. Standing in front of the towering glass building that now housed her dreams, she took a deep breath. This was it—her first day at her new job.

She had barely slept the night before, her mind swirling with possibilities, excitement, and a tinge of nervousness. The city was still waking up, the golden rays of the morning sun reflecting off the sleek skyscrapers as people bustled around, each lost in their own world. Adjusting the strap of her bag, she stepped inside the building, the cool air-conditioning a stark contrast to the warmth of the outside world.

The receptionist greeted her with a polite nod before handing over an ID card. "Welcome, Miss Verma. Your department is on the 14th floor. You can take the elevator to your left."

Sia smiled in gratitude, clutching the ID card as though it were the key to her future. The elevator doors slid open, and she stepped inside, pressing the button for the 14th floor. As the doors closed, she inhaled deeply, trying to steady her nerves. She had worked hard for this opportunity, and she wasn't about to let her anxiety ruin it.

The floor was as pristine as she had imagined—sleek white walls, polished wooden floors, and a quiet hum of efficiency in the air. Employees moved about with purpose, and their professionalism was evident in their posture and attire. Sia made her way to her assigned desk, carefully placing her things down before glancing around. Her workstation was minimalistic yet modern, a glass desk with a high-end laptop and a neat stack of documents waiting to be reviewed.

Before she could settle in, a voice interrupted her thoughts.

"New here?"

Sia turned to find a woman in her early thirties smiling at her. She had short, dark hair and wore a navy-blue suit that screamed authority.

"Yes," Sia responded with a polite nod. "I'm Sia Verma. Today's my first day."

"Welcome to the team. I'm Maya, the senior manager of this department. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."

"Thank you, I appreciate that."

Maya's gaze flickered to the entrance of the department. "By the way, you should know something—Alex Carter is your direct supervisor. And he—well, let's just say he doesn't have much patience for mistakes."

The name alone sent a ripple of unease through Sia. She had read about Alex Carter before. He was known for his sharp business acumen, his ability to turn failing projects into successes, and—most notably—his ruthless perfectionism. Employees often whispered about his intimidating presence, his no-nonsense attitude, and his tendency to expect nothing short of brilliance.

Sia swallowed hard. Great. Just great.

Before she could process Maya's warning, a sudden shift in the atmosphere made the entire room stand still. The rhythmic clicking of polished leather shoes echoed down the hall. Conversations ceased. People straightened in their seats.

And then, he walked in.

Alex Carter.

The man carried an air of authority so profound it was almost tangible. His sharp, well-tailored charcoal suit accentuated his broad shoulders, and his steel-gray eyes swept over the department like a predator assessing his territory. His jawline was defined, his expression unreadable—cold, calculated, and utterly composed.

Sia could feel her pulse quicken. There was no mistaking why people feared him. He exuded power, the kind that demanded respect without a single word being spoken.

He paused by her desk, his gaze dropping to the ID card clipped to her blouse. "Sia Verma," he stated, rather than asked. "New recruit?"

"Yes, sir." Her voice was steadier than she expected.

His eyes lingered on her for a fraction of a second longer before he handed her a file. "Review this and have a detailed report ready by the end of the day. No errors. Understood?"

She nodded quickly. "Understood."

With that, he moved on, as though she was no more significant than the office furniture around him. Sia let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.

Maya, who had been watching the exchange, leaned over and whispered, "You survived your first interaction. That's an achievement."

Sia let out a nervous chuckle before turning her attention to the file in her hands. She had a long day ahead of her.

Hours passed in a blur of numbers, analysis, and research. Sia was completely absorbed in her work, determined to prove herself on her very first day. By the time she looked at the clock, it was already past lunch. Her stomach grumbled in protest, but she ignored it, her priority set on finishing her report perfectly.

She was almost done when a message popped up on her screen.

Alex Carter: My office. Now.

Her heart nearly stopped.

Gathering her courage, she picked up the file and made her way to the corner office, where the glass walls provided a panoramic view of the city skyline. Taking a deep breath, she knocked.

"Come in." His voice was smooth yet firm.

Sia stepped inside, holding out the report. Alex took it from her hands and flipped through the pages, his expression unreadable. The silence stretched, making her shift uncomfortably.

Finally, he looked up. "This is decent work for your first day."

A flicker of relief coursed through her.

"But," he continued, and her relief was short-lived, "decent isn't enough. I expect excellence. Revise sections three and five. They lack depth. I want it redone before the end of the day."

She swallowed her disappointment and nodded. "I'll fix it."

Alex studied her for a moment before speaking again. "A word of advice, Miss Verma—if you want to survive here, you'll need to learn to keep up. No second chances."

Her fingers curled into fists at her sides, but she kept her expression neutral. "Understood."

"Good. Dismissed."

As she walked back to her desk, determination burned in her chest.

She wasn't going to let Alex Carter intimidate her. She was here to prove herself, and she would—no matter what it took.
