Baby, we'll come back for you, I promise. -You calmed him down
Jace just clung tighter.
But... but I miss you already! -He said
Jhoanna looked at you desperately.
Darling, I can't do this... Let's just take him home. -Jhoanna said
Jho, no! -You turned back to Jace.
Baby, I know it's scary, but daycare is fun! You get to play and make new friends! -You added
Jhoanna sniffled.
Or we can just keep him with us forever— -She said
Jhoanna! -You stopped her from talking
Jace wiped his tears, still sniffling.
Promise you'll come back? -He asked
You kissed his forehead.
Cross my heart, baby. -You said softly
Jhoanna squeezed him tight.
And if anyone makes you sad, tell me. I'll— -She said but you cut her off
Jhoanna! -You scolded again.
She sighed, kissing Jace's chubby cheeks.
Fine. Have fun, anak. -She said
Jace hesitated, then nodded slowly.
Okay... but can I have ice cream later? -He asked
You chuckled.
Of course, baby. -You replied
And with that, he finally let go, waving at you with a small smile.
As soon as you walked out, Jhoanna grabbed your arm.
Darling, let's spy through the window, -She whispered.
Jhoanna— -You tried
Just five minutes. -She said
You groaned, but when you saw Jace already playing with the other kids, you smiled.
He was going to be okay.
And maybe—just maybe—Jhoanna would survive this, too.
---
It had only been two hours since you and Jhoanna dropped Jace off at daycare.
Jhoanna had spent the first hour scrolling through photos of Jace on her phone, sighing dramatically.
The second hour?
She was pacing the living room, saying, "What if he's crying? What if he's hungry? What if—"
And just as you were about to reassure her for the 100th time—
Your phone rang.
It was from the daycare.
You and Jhoanna exchanged a panicked look.
You quickly answered. "Hello?"
The teacher's voice sounded nervous. "Uh, hi, Mommy. So... we had a little problem with Jace today..."
Jhoanna's eyes widened. "I knew it. Who do I have to fight?!"
You covered the speaker and whispered, "Jho, stop." Then, back to the call: "What happened?"
The teacher sighed. "Well... Jace tried to escape."
You blinked. "He what?"
Jhoanna gasped. "THAT'S MY BOY."
"JHOANNA!"
The teacher cleared her throat. "We caught him sneaking towards the door with his backpack on. When we asked where he was going, he said... um..."
You already knew this was going to be bad. "What did he say?"
"He said: I'm going home. My mommies miss me too much."
Jhoanna clutched her chest. "HE KNEW."
You facepalmed. "Oh my god."
The teacher let out a small laugh. "Don't worry! We talked to him, and he's playing now. But... maybe remind him that daycare isn't a prison?"
You groaned. "We'll talk to him when we pick him up."
Jhoanna was already grabbing her car keys.
We have to go now—our baby tried to break free! -She said
You sighed.
Jho, he's fine! -You said
She shook her head.
No, no, no. I knew he was suffering. I felt it. My baby needs me. -She muttered
Jhoanna, you're being dramatic— -You said
Then, your phone dinged with a picture from the daycare teacher.
It was Jace.
Happily eating a snack, completely fine.
Jhoanna squinted at the photo.
...Wait, he doesn't look sad. -She mumbled
You crossed your arms.
Exactly. -You said
She huffed.
I still think we should bust him out. -She said
You shook your head, laughing.
Jho, let's at least wait until pickup time before you plan a daycare rescue mission. -You said
Jhoanna sighed.
Fine. But I swear, he almost made it out. -She muttered
And that was the day you realized—Jace might have inherited Jhoanna's dramatic tendencies.
