The sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the small Texas town of Willow Creek. Tyler Scott leaned against his squad car, arms folded, his dark eyes scanning the quiet street. It had been another slow evening. Willow Creek was the kind of place where everyone knew everyone, and the usual routine for the cops was more about handing out speeding tickets and breaking up the occasional bar fight than chasing down criminals. Still, Tyler liked the peace. He'd been through enough chaos in his old life as a detective in Dallas. He was ready for the slower pace, even if it meant a lack of excitement.
His phone buzzed, breaking his thoughts. A message from dispatch.
"Brush fire reported near Pine Ridge. Fire department's already en route. Possible evacuation. Code Red."
Tyler cursed under his breath, pushing off the car. A brush fire wasn't anything new to Willow Creek. Every summer, the dry heat would spark something. But Pine Ridge—that was a different story. It was a remote area, full of old cabins, forest, and thick brush, the kind of place that would be hard to evacuate if things got out of hand. He quickly got in the car and flipped on the sirens, heading for the edge of town.
When Tyler arrived, the scene was already a whirlwind of activity. The fire department trucks were lined up, lights flashing, and firefighters were racing to unload hoses, gear, and emergency equipment. The smell of smoke hung thick in the air, and the faint crackling of flames was all he needed to hear to know this was more than just another small brush fire.
He spotted Riley Matthews immediately. She stood with her back to him, barking orders to her team, her dark hair pulled into a tight ponytail, and her fireproof gear giving her an air of command. She was at least six inches shorter than Tyler, but her presence was commanding. He had heard about her before—Riley Matthews, Captain of the Willow Creek Fire Department. She was as tough as they came.
"Alright, listen up!" Riley's voice rang out over the noise of the engines. "Tommy, get that hose to the west side. Maya, check the evac routes on the east. Kenny, I need you on perimeter duty—don't let anyone through. Jenna, radio me every ten minutes with updates."
Her voice was sharp and confident, and Tyler couldn't help but watch her as she moved with authority, her team responding instantly to her every command. He felt a jolt of respect. But there was something else—something that made his pulse quicken. Maybe it was the way she didn't flinch as the fire roared in the distance or how she seemed utterly unbothered by the chaos around her.
Tyler walked over, pushing through the crowd. He couldn't help but notice the way she commanded attention from everyone around her, her eyes focused on the job. When she saw him approaching, her lips curled into a knowing smile, and she raised an eyebrow.
"Well, well, if it isn't Officer Scott. Didn't expect to see you at a fire," Riley said, her tone playful but no less serious.
"Just because I don't fight fires doesn't mean I don't care about them," Tyler replied, his voice low, his gaze steady. He stepped closer, feeling the heat from the fire just beyond the ridge. "What's the situation?"
She didn't answer right away. Instead, she scanned the horizon, eyes narrowing in the dimming light. "We've got a fire line that's shifting. It's moving faster than we thought. We're gonna need to get those cabins evacuated, but the smoke's already thick. It's dangerous out there."
Tyler crossed his arms, studying the smoke rising in the distance. "We'll handle the evac. You focus on getting that fire under control."
Riley shot him a glance, her smile fading slightly as she considered him. "You always this bossy with your fire calls?"
"Only when it's important," Tyler shot back, his lips twitching into a half-smile.
For a moment, they locked eyes, and something passed between them—an unspoken tension. Riley seemed to consider him for a second longer than usual before nodding.
"Fine. You handle the people. I'll handle the fire," she said, turning her back to him. "And stay out of the way, Officer."
"Always do," he muttered, but she was already moving on to the next task.
As the night wore on, Tyler worked with Riley's team to get the cabins evacuated. His heart raced as he watched the fire spread. It was clear this was no ordinary brush fire—it was becoming something much more dangerous. Riley's team didn't skip a beat, working tirelessly, moving like a well-oiled machine.
And through it all, Tyler kept finding himself drawn back to Riley. He couldn't help it—there was something about her. She wasn't just commanding; she was alive with the fire, with the danger. She moved like she thrived in it, every decision sharp and calculated. She was the exact opposite of him—spontaneous, quick to act, no hesitation. Yet it worked.
As the fire continued to rage and the evacuation was completed, Tyler found himself standing beside Riley again, their eyes meeting as they watched the smoke swirling in the air.
"You did good," Tyler said, his voice softer now, a trace of admiration in his words.
Riley didn't look at him directly, but the corner of her mouth twitched upward. "We all did."
The fire was far from under control, but in that moment, Tyler couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something much bigger than either of them anticipated.
