Lia's POV:
There was something about being in the stands at Easton's games that made everything feel... off. He was the star, the golden boy, the one everyone adored. I watched as he threw another perfect pass down the field, and the crowd went wild. Girls practically melted when he smiled, and I couldn't blame them. How could anyone not? His green eyes were bright with confidence, his hazel blonde hair catching the stadium lights in just the right way, and when he laughed, it sounded like the universe had decided to bless everyone around him.
And then there was me. The girl who didn't belong. The scholarship kid with average features, just trying to stay unnoticed in the crowd. I was invisible to everyone—except to him.
Easton had always been my best friend, but lately, things were starting to feel... different. It was hard to ignore the little moments that started to make my heart race—his teasing smiles, the way his touch lingered a little too long when he passed me something, the way he looked at me sometimes like I was the only thing that mattered.
But that wasn't possible, right? He was the one who had it all. And I was just... well, me. So, I kept those feelings locked up, buried deep where no one would ever see them.
After the game ended, I found my usual spot by the bleachers, trying not to look too out of place as the crowd dispersed. I was hoping to avoid eye contact with anyone else—especially the football guys. But, of course, Easton spotted me instantly, and with his usual confident swagger, he came right over.
"Hey, Trouble," he teased, a grin spreading across his face as he ruffled my hair. He always called me that when he was in a good mood, which—let's face it—was basically all the time. "How's my favorite person?"
I rolled my eyes, trying to ignore the warmth that spread through me whenever he said things like that. "Just fine, East. You know, just sitting here like a normal person while you're out there living the dream."
His grin widened. "I do live the dream, don't I? But hey, someone's gotta keep you entertained while the rest of the world goes crazy over me, right?"
I let out a laugh, but there was a twist of something else underneath it. Was it jealousy? Or something worse? I tried to shake the thought, but it lingered.
"You're so full of yourself, you know that?"
"You love it," he shot back without hesitation, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Admit it."
I smirked, but my eyes couldn't help but follow him as he stretched his arms above his head. God, he really was everything—handsome, athletic, the kind of guy everyone would want to be around. And here I was, the girl in the background who would never be part of that world.
But then his voice cut through my thoughts. "So, are you coming to the party tonight?"
I looked at him in surprise. "The after-party? What, you want me to babysit your fans?"
He shrugged. "I'm not asking you to babysit anyone. Just wanna make sure you don't get left behind."
The teasing tone was there, but there was something else, something more serious beneath it. I couldn't put my finger on it.
"I don't know," I said, feeling a little caught off guard. "Not really my scene, East."
His eyes softened just a little, the usual playful glint fading into something more sincere—almost... protective. "Doesn't matter. You're coming with me." He leaned in slightly, lowering his voice just enough that only I could hear. "I don't want anyone else trying to get too close to you tonight."
I opened my mouth to protest, but before I could say anything, a voice interrupted us.
"Hey, Lia, you coming to the party?" Jared—one of Easton's teammates—was standing behind me, his smile too casual for my liking.
I turned back to Easton, only to see his expression shift. His jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing, the playful guy from a second ago vanishing in an instant.
"Jared," Easton said, his voice suddenly colder. "No. She's with me tonight."
Jared hesitated, clearly thrown off by Easton's tone. "Oh, I didn't—sorry, man. Didn't mean to step on your toes."
Easton didn't even look at him as he turned away. He was focused on me now, his gaze intense, almost dangerous.
I swallowed hard, trying to hide the flutter in my chest. "What's going on with you, East? Why are you acting like this?"
He didn't answer right away. Instead, he looked down at me, his eyes darkening, and I could feel the tension between us, thick and heavy. "Just trust me, Lia," he said, his voice low. "You don't want to be anywhere else but with me tonight."
