The rhythmic beeping of the monitors, the sterile scent of antiseptic, the focused energy in the operating room—this was Noor Abdullah's world. A world of precision, logic, and control. A world where, for a few hours, nothing else mattered but the life in front of her.
She had spent the last four hours in surgery, removing a ruptured appendix from a sixteen-year-old girl. The case had been tricky—the patient had been rushed in with severe abdominal pain, and by the time Noor had scrubbed in, the infection had already begun spreading. But she had handled it, like she always did, with steady hands and unwavering focus.
"Good job, Dr. Noor," one of the assisting nurses said as Noor stepped back from the operating table.
Noor only gave a small nod, her mind already shifting to her next case. It was easier this way. Easier than thinking about the whirlwind of events outside the hospital walls.
Her fingers flexed at her sides as she peeled off her gloves, her wedding ring finger conspicuously bare.
She had been engaged. Almost married.
She could still hear her mother's voice, full of unfiltered grief and disappointment. How could he do this? How could he leave you for another woman?
Noor didn't have an answer. She hadn't even seen it coming. One moment, she was preparing for her Nikah, convincing herself that she had made the right choice. And the next? A phone call, a quiet confession, and a wedding that would never happen.
She clenched her jaw and exhaled slowly. It didn't matter. None of it did. Right now, she had patients to attend to.
After washing up, she stepped out of the surgical wing, heading toward the staff lounge for a much-needed break. She barely made it five steps before being intercepted by a nurse.
"Dr. Noor, the patient in Exam Room 3 is getting impatient," the nurse said, rolling her eyes. "He's been waiting for over an hour and has asked three times already."
Noor sighed. It wasn't unusual to have impatient patients. But something in the nurse's expression made her pause.
"Is he being rude?"
The nurse hesitated before nodding. "More like entitled. He's been complaining non-stop."
Noor squared her shoulders. She had no patience for men who thought their time was more valuable than anyone else's.
"Alright. Let's see what his problem is."
