(Note: All SFW with 2 brief comments about Natsuki's father, but nothing too direct to the situation. This is all my own headcanon, it's all fictional. It would be set in more of the DDLC+ time period as MC is not here or mentioned.) (2,220 words)
Poetry was the current topic of the literature club and the pink-haired tsundere was bored. School was stupid; She had barely slept the night before, being kept up by her father yelling on the phone and then laughing as loud as he could at the tv. At least the yelling wasn't directed at her, she was grateful for that. Nonetheless, it all made her tired and she could barely keep her eyelids up during classes. Fatigue and boredom caused something fuzzy to go on in her brain, something she hadn't told a soul about.
"Descriptive words are important," Monika went on, talking with her hands. "If you want the reader to really feel your poem, you must use powerful descriptive words! Sayori, give me a descriptive word."
Sayori perked up, having been actively participating the whole time. "Oh, oh! Uhhhh," she bit her lip a little before a light bulb lit up above her head. "Sunny!"
"Great job! Yuri, how about you?"
Pushing her long, purple, silky curtain out of her eyes, Yuri looked up from her book to reply, "Uncanny."
"Very nice! And now, Natsuki!"
Mind fuzzy, Natsuki gazed up at her friend with big eyes. A descriptive word is... she couldn't fully remember. As soon as she tried to come up with an answer, it would slip away from her, much like most of her big thoughts. "Ummm..." She traced Monika with her eyes, noticing her awkwardly twirling a strand of hair while waiting. "Twirl! Twirl," Natsuki nodded confidently, finally having found a word that made sense to her.
All the girls looked at her quizzically, aware that she basically zoned out for several minutes before spitting out a completely random word. The smile on Monika's face faltered for a moment as she replied, "Uh, maybe we could say something was 'twirly', but only in certain circumstances. Good job, though! Um, anyway, descriptive words are important when we want to express our deepest emotions."
The more time passed, the more little Natsuki felt, and not just because she was short. She spun her sparkly pen around, doodled in her notebook, and chewed on her thumb. Monika tried to ignore her as she just assumed she was being rude and slacking off. Sayori didn't notice her at all. Yuri, on the other hand, was watching out of the corner of her eye, hidden behind her hair.
The infamous bookworm had scoured every library in the city, reading book after book. One day, in the psychology section, she found a book on something called "age regression". It made her raise a brow, so she read it. In that moment, she was very glad she had that knowledge as she felt equipped to help her friend.
After nearly 10 more minutes of Monika's lecture on word choices in poetry, they were released to independent reading or writing time. Yuri took this as an opportunity. Sliding out of her desk, she walked over to Natsuki, who was picking at a sticker on her notebook, and bent down. Large, pink, innocent eyes met concerned purple.
"Yooi!" she exclaimed, wiggling a ton.
Suspicions confirmed, Yuri jumped into trying to be a babysitter of sorts. "Hey, Natsuki, were you drawing?"
"Yeah! Kitties and dat's a cupcake and- "She flipped through a couple pages of doodles, pointing at everything as she named them.
Yuri nodded along, seeming very interested. "That's amazing, Natsuki! Good job!" She quickly scanned the room, making sure the others wouldn't overhear the girl's high-pitched, slurred speech; Thankfully, Sayori was writing and Monika was helping her with a dictionary and thesaurus.
