The final bell's shrill ring was a welcome sound. I grinned, spotting Lou by the bike racks, his blonde hair catching the sunlight. He was leaning against his bright red bicycle, sketching in his notebook - a picture of carefree happiness. Just seeing him made my anxieties melt away.

"Lou! Can we stop by the river again and chill for a bit? I'd love to just hang out with you." I asked, grabbing my own bike.

"Yeah sounds good. " he replied, his smile as bright as the sun.

Our ride home was a blur of sunshine, laughter, and easy conversation. We talked about classes, his latest art project, and the upcoming school festival. It was perfect, a blissful bubble of normalcy. A bubble about to burst.

We reached our usual spot, a bench overlooking the river. As we settled in, I saw a group of teenagers chilling too, and Arthur?? My ex. He was leaning against a nearby tree, looking... subdued. He hadn't seen us yet, but the sight of him sent a chill down my spine. The happy bubble popped, replaced by a knot of unease in my stomach.

Lou, sensing my shift in mood, gently squeezed my hand. "Everything alright, Marius?"

I forced a smile. "Yeah, just... surprised to see him here." The words felt hollow.

Arthur finally noticed us. He gave me a hesitant wave, a flicker of something - regret? - in his eyes. Lou, completely unaware, returned the wave with a friendly smile.

"Who's that?" he asked, his brow furrowed with curiosity.

"An old... acquaintance," I mumbled, trying to sound nonchalant. The nonchalance was a pathetic façade; my heart hammered against my ribs. What was he doing here? Seabrook was small, but I hadn't seen him since... well, since things ended between us.

Arthur approached, his usual confident swagger replaced by a hesitant gait. "Marius," he said, his voice softer than I remembered.

The ensuing small talk felt excruciatingly awkward. Arthur mumbled something about visiting family, but his explanation felt unconvincing. I couldn't shake the feeling that his appearance wasn't coincidental. The happy afternoon had taken a sharp, unsettling turn. The beautiful sunset, once a perfect backdrop to our happiness, now felt like a looming shadow, casting a long, uncertain darkness over our future. The peace I'd carefully built with Lou felt fragile, threatened by the unexpected reappearance of my past.
