The Hidden Truths

Prologue (Melody's point of view)

I was walking through the school's hallways with my childhood best friend, Leo. We were heading to the lockers to get our things to go home.
"I'm so excited about my birthday tomorrow," I said quickly as I smiled at Leo. I couldn't help but see the nervousness in his eyes but thinking it was nothing, I chose to not pay attention to it.

"Yeah...I'm sure your birthday will be memorable...especially when you turn 16," Leo stated nervously. I heard the stress in Leo's voice and I looked at him as we got to the lockers. I could tell something was off but I was unsure what it could be. I tried not to focus on it too much considering I was probably wrong.

4-13-22 CLICK. I opened my locker and got my things and looked over at Leo who was doing the same. I close my locker.
"I'll see tomorrow Leo" I smile brightly.
"Yeah I'll see you tomorrow, Melody." he said with a small smile back before we walked our separate ways. Something was definitely off with Leo.

Once I got home I checked to see how my parents were and then immediately  went upstairs to my room. I took off my backpack and set it down at my desk and sat down on my bed. I already completed all my work for the day so I got ready for bed so I could relax. I took a hot shower to shake my thoughts off about why Leo was acting so strange, but it only made me think deeper on the situation.

We always show excitement for our birthdays, so why wasn't he happy for me? I am turning sixteen, this is a big deal. Does he not remember how excited I was for him to turn sixteen? Something is not right. The hot water slowly turned colder, I got out, dried off, and slipped into my favorite flannel pjs and a face mask. Just because he isn't happy for me, doesn't mean I can't be! Twenty minutes go by, and my face mask is ready to come off. I rub in the extra moisturizer, clean off my hands, and head down for a late night snack. Hmm.. strawberries and whip cream!

A few hours go by, I finished my dessert, and I find it  difficult to fall asleep.  Thankfully, tomorrow happens to be a Saturday, so I stayed up till one in the morning with ruminating thoughts in my head, before I finally dozed off to sleep.
