Chapter 1: The Rules

Alie Morgan had always been the kind of girl who followed the rules. She didn't know any other way to live. Her entire life had been built around expectations—her father's standards, her mother's idea of perfection, and the invisible rules of being the perfect daughter. The Morgan name carried weight, and Alie had spent her 19 years upholding it, living in the shadow of her family's wealth and influence.

But deep down, there was something inside her that longed for more. It wasn't that Alie hated her life—it was just that it felt... small. She had spent her childhood being groomed for a future that didn't feel like it belonged to her. The right grades, the right friends, the right appearances—Alie had done it all, and yet, something was always missing. She didn't want to just be a name in a well-to-do family. She wanted to be something real. Something her own.

Her eyes flicked over the pristine kitchen of their mansion as she took a slow sip of her coffee. The large windows framed the perfectly manicured lawn outside. It was almost too perfect. In a way, it made her feel trapped. The silence of the house was familiar but suffocating. Every room seemed to echo with expectations, and every inch of it felt like a reminder of how little room there was for her to be herself.

"Alie, honey, are you ready?" Her mother's voice broke through her thoughts, warm yet laced with an undertone of urgency. Alie turned to see her standing in the doorway, already dressed to perfection in a tailored suit, her blonde hair styled to perfection. Her mother looked every bit the image of success.

"I'm almost ready," Alie said softly, pushing the coffee cup aside and standing up from the table. She could already feel the weight of her mother's gaze, the silent assessment that always came with it. Her mother expected perfection in everything, including how Alie presented herself.

"You'll do great," her mother said with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Remember what we talked about. College is your chance to shine. Don't forget your responsibilities."

Alie nodded, though she couldn't help but wonder if her mother even knew what she wanted out of life. She'd always pushed her to be someone else, someone better. And yet, here she was, on the cusp of her first day at Miami University, about to leave the sheltered world of her family's mansion. It was supposed to be exciting. But instead, it felt like another step in the same well-worn path of meeting others' expectations.

The drive to campus was short, only about twenty minutes, but every minute felt like an eternity. Miami was a far cry from the suburban quiet of their neighborhood. The streets were bustling with people, the energy of the city overwhelming. Alie had spent her whole life in this bubble, a bubble that had been carefully constructed by her parents to protect her from the chaos of the outside world. But as she looked out of the car window at the vibrant city around her, she couldn't help but feel a pang of curiosity—what else was out there beyond the walls of her sheltered existence?

When they arrived at Miami University, Alie's heart pounded in her chest. The sprawling campus was even bigger than she had imagined, filled with groups of students chatting and walking to and from their classes. The campus buzzed with the kind of energy Alie had only ever read about in novels or seen in movies. She was both excited and overwhelmed, and a knot formed in her stomach.

"Here we are," her mother said, pulling the car to a stop in front of the main building. "Just remember what I told you. Keep your head down, don't make waves, and you'll be fine."

Alie glanced at her mother, unsure of what to say. This was supposed to be her moment to step out of her parents' shadow, to take a chance and try something new. But with every word her mother spoke, it felt like the weight of her family's expectations was still hanging over her.

"I know," Alie said, swallowing her nerves. "I'll be fine."

Her mother's eyes softened slightly, but only for a moment. "Good. Don't forget, we'll be in Miami for family dinners every weekend. Stay focused."

"I won't forget," Alie said, even though the idea of being constantly monitored made her feel like she was suffocating. Still, she managed a smile as she got out of the car. "I'll call you later, okay?"

"Don't forget to stay in touch," her mother said, already reaching for her phone. "Good luck."

Alie closed the car door with a soft click, feeling the weight of the moment settle on her. This was it—the beginning of her college life. She stood there for a moment, taking in the sprawling campus. Students bustled around her, laughing and chatting, seemingly so confident, so at ease with the world. Alie felt like an outsider, a stranger in a world she didn't quite understand yet. But she had to try. She had to find her place.

She picked up her bag and started walking toward her first class, her heart racing in her chest. She wasn't sure what to expect, but she hoped that for once, she could be more than the perfect daughter. She wanted to be Alie—just Alie.

As she walked through the crowded campus, a voice called out from behind her.

"Hey, you look lost."

Alie turned, startled. Standing in front of her was a guy, probably around her age. He had messy brown hair, a confident smile, and an aura that screamed attention. He was leaning against a pillar, one arm casually resting on it as he looked at her with a teasing glint in his eyes.

"Um, not really," Alie said, instinctively backing away slightly. She wasn't used to being approached like this.

"Good," he said with a grin, pushing himself off the pillar and walking toward her. "But you're new around here, right?"

"Yeah," Alie said, trying to sound confident even though she felt anything but. "I'm Alie."

"I'm Cale." He smiled wider, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "So, what brings you to Miami?"

Alie hesitated. This wasn't the kind of interaction her parents had prepared her for. They'd always warned her about people like him—people who didn't follow the rules, people who didn't care about appearances. They'd made it clear that someone like Cale was a distraction, a potential problem in her carefully curated life.

"I'm here for college," Alie said, trying to sound casual, though her voice was shaky. "It's my first day."

"First day, huh?" Cale's smile turned teasing. "You're lucky to be in Miami. Best city in the world. Lots of fun to be had here. You should definitely take advantage of it."

Alie's heart skipped a beat. There was something about him that made her both nervous and curious. He had a way of making her feel seen, but also like she didn't belong. And yet, she couldn't seem to look away.

"Uh, thanks," Alie said, unsure of what else to say. "I should probably get going..."

"No worries," Cale said, stepping back and giving her space. "But if you ever want to get away from the books and have some fun, just let me know. Miami's full of opportunities."

Alie nodded, feeling a strange pull in her chest. She wasn't sure what it was about Cale, but something about him felt different. It wasn't just his appearance, the carefree attitude he wore like a second skin. It was the way he seemed to exist in a world that Alie had never truly been a part of. He was the kind of person her parents warned her about—the kind of person she had always been told to avoid.

But something in her made her wonder if maybe, just maybe, he was exactly what she needed to break free.
