The first semester of school had already begun, and while Jira and Rin were both 14, Kit was two years older, already 16. The school year had just started, but Kit had already begun her intense training for the mid-season basketball competition that was quickly approaching. With every practice session, the pressure mounted. The team was gearing up, and Kit was at the center of it all.
Jira and Rin had come to support Kit that afternoon. Kit had become an integral part of their school’s basketball team, and both girls had always admired her from the sidelines. As Kit practiced, shooting hoops and running drills, Jira noticed something different about Rin. For the first time in a long while, Rin had brought a friend with her, someone Jira hadn’t seen before.
After a few hours of intense practice, Kit was finally done. She walked off the court, sweat dripping down her face. She grabbed a towel from the bench and wiped her face, catching her breath. As always, she went to the bathroom to freshen up before heading to dinner with Rin and her family.
It was during that brief downtime when Kit couldn’t help but wonder who Rin's new friend was—the one who had been sitting beside her in the bleachers, watching the practice so intently.
After washing up, Kit returned to Rin’s room, where the two of them had shared countless conversations in the past. She hesitated for a moment, then casually asked, “So, who’s the friend you brought today?”
Rin raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
“The one who came to watch practice with you. The girl you brought with you today. Who is she?”
“Oh, that’s Jira, my best friend from high school,” Rin replied, her tone nonchalant.
Kit froze for a second. She hadn’t realized that Jira had changed so much over the summer. The last time she’d seen Jira, she was the same quiet girl who had always hung around Rin. But now, something has shifted in Jira. Her appearance had completely changed—her style was different, more mature. Her once timid demeanor had been replaced by a quiet confidence that Kit had never seen before.
“She’s... different now,” Kit muttered more to herself than to Rin. “I didn’t expect that.”
Rin smiled softly, “Yeah, she’s been working on herself—trying to change her style before school started. It’s been good for her.”
Kit nodded slowly, still processing the change. She had never really noticed Jira in this way before, but now, something was pulling at her. It was almost as though she was seeing Jira for the first time.
