Daughter of the Underworld
Lilly had always known she was different. She had felt it in the way shadows seemed to curl toward her when the lights dimmed, how whispers lingered in her ears when she walked through old graveyards, and in the heaviness of her dreams filled with faces she had never met but somehow knew. Her father, Hades, had sent her to the mortal world for her safety, but now, at sixteen, she could no longer hide what she was.
Her powers had begun to manifest. Shadows responded to her moods, twisting unnaturally in her presence. She could sense the restless spirits of the dead, their voices faint but persistent, calling for her help or simply existing as a constant hum in the back of her mind. Mortal life had become unbearable. And so, after years of staying hidden, her father had finally decided it was time for her to go to Camp Half-Blood.
“Do not fear them, Lilly,” Hades had said the night before she left. His voice had echoed through the cavernous halls of his underworld palace, calm and commanding. “You are my daughter. You are meant for greatness, no matter what they might think.”
Lilly wasn’t so sure. She stood at the edge of the camp now, her heart pounding as she stared at the pine tree marking the border. A golden fleece hung from one of its branches, radiating a faint, otherworldly glow that only heightened her anxiety. She adjusted the strap of her black leather backpack, her fingers brushing the hilt of her celestial bronze dagger hidden inside for reassurance.
“Here goes nothing,” she murmured, stepping over the invisible boundary.
The path crunched beneath her combat boots as she made her way toward the heart of the camp. Her gothic style—black lace gloves, a silver crescent moon pendant, and a dark corset layered over her shirt—seemed to amplify the unnatural aura that surrounded her. Her long black hair cascaded down her back, gleaming like a raven’s wing in the sunlight. She didn’t mean to draw attention, but there was no helping it. She knew she stood out.
Campers were everywhere—training with swords, practicing archery, tending to Pegasus stables—but one by one, they stopped what they were doing as she approached. Whispers rippled through the crowd like a gust of wind.
“New camper,” someone muttered, just loud enough for Lilly to hear.
“Did you see the shadows shift? That’s her,” another added. “The daughter of him.”
Their voices clung to her, thick and heavy like the weight of the Underworld itself. She kept walking, her shoulders squared and her chin up, but inside, her heart twisted with dread. She hadn’t even spoken to anyone yet, and already they were judging her for who her father was.
The camp itself was beautiful. Rolling hills stretched into the distance, dotted with lush greenery and shimmering streams. The cabins stood in a U-shaped formation, each one unique and reflecting its divine patron. But no amount of charm could ease the tension in the air as campers watched her every move.
When she finally reached the steps of the Big House, she hesitated. She could feel the judgment pressing down on her, could hear fragments of their conversations.
“Do you think she’s dangerous?”
“She’s the daughter of Hades. Of course she is.”
Lilly closed her eyes for a moment, steadying her breath. Don’t let them get to you, she thought. Then, with as much confidence as she could muster, she stepped forward and pushed open the door.
Inside, she was greeted by a centaur with a kind face and wise eyes. Chiron. He was everything her father had described—gentle yet imposing, with an air of calm authority.
“Welcome, Lilly,” he said warmly. “I’ve been expecting you.”
