Outside was a very gloomy day, the streets were wet while the clouds were dark grey and people were honking everywhere due to LA traffic. I dug around for my keys after entering my apartment building then searched what seemed like my whole purse, just to find them in my pocket. As soon as I unlocked the door, my baby came running towards me. "Mommy!" She yelled while hugging my leg and a smile appeared on my face. "Hi babes, did you have fun with auntie Megan?" I asked while setting the groceries in the kitchen and seeing my sister-in-law on the couch.
"Hey Presley, busy downtown?" Megan asked while helping me put away groceries, I nodded then dried off some of the items with a random towel.

Ella was telling me all the things she did while I was shopping,
I smiled and wiped my eyes dry as she looked exactly like Matt- my husband.

I walked over to the fridge to grab a soda when I saw a picture of us three on the outside. It was taken a few moments after I had given birth to Ella, Megan took the photo and that picture meant everything to me as I was staring at our child but Matt was staring at me. "I remember that day," Megan noticed and grabbed a Diet Coke from the fridge, "my brother was such a happy guy- never seen him like that, Ella truly changed him..." she added as I nodded and the memories came flooding back.

Matt was my husband of 3 years- we met at a bar when I was in college and he was having a rough day from fire school, he bought me a drink then challenged me to a game of pool, he used to joke that was his biggest regret because I 'embarrassed' his lack of skill. We dated for a year then he proposed and three months after the wedding, we found out I was pregnant with our daughter Ella. Just like Megan said, our lives were truly changed after having that girl, but in the best way possible.
2 months ago today, Ella had the worst night sleeping ever- she was up every hour, cry. It was 6:40 when I made her breakfast and sat her on the sofa, praying she would fall asleep, but she didn't. Matt had woken up and decided to join us for an early breakfast until 7 am, when he got a work call. There was a huge fire downtown and almost every officer and fire fighter were called to the scene- Matt had given Ella and I a kiss goodbye before he ran out the door... we did not know at the time that would be our very last time every seeing and saying goodbye the most important boy in our lives.

At 10 am, I had gotten a phone call from one of Matt's work buddies. He explained how there was one more guy in the burning building so my husband ran through the doors, within three minutes, the whole building collapsed as the flames shot higher. His buddy added that around 9:30, the police had found my husband's dead body, piggy-backing the other person's dead body... this was the biggest shock of my life as I remember going into full panic mode. The week after that was Matt's funeral, aka worst week of my life. Ella had not slept, I had not slept, neither of us could stop crying and the house was cold.

Fast forward to two months later, I am standing in the kitchen of my new apartment with Ella asleep on the couch, and Megan giving me a big hug as we were both now in tears.

"I miss him so much." I cried into Megan's arms, she nodded as she was used to this by now. She had offered to spend a few months with us girls, trying to help out with Ella while I had to work. "He didn't choose to leave us like this Presley." Megan reminded, "two months without him- this is hell." I said while wiping under my eyes and laughing as Megan cracked a half smile. "Well somehow we've made it this far...you got a new apartment, your daughter still giggles, I'm here- what else?" She said and I nodded while reminding myself to appreciate what I still had.

We sat on the couch and talked for awhile as Ella was asleep right next to me, I played with her hair while listening to Megan but within a few minutes, I also fell asleep.

I woke up after my dream scared me awake, ever since Matt died, I had been having
the same dream of being alone- in a dark room, with no windows and a picture
of Ella on the wall. It would always scare me awake when there was a knock on the wall...

"Same dream?" Megan asked as I sat up, breathing heavy, I nodded as she frowned. "You should go to therapy or something for that-" she suggested while stirring something in a pot, I nodded as she says this every time and I never listen.
"Whatcha making?" I asked and noticed Ella was still asleep, I decided to let her rest because she had not been sleeping ever since you know what. "Soup, you hungry?" Megan asked and I smiled.

"Any plans this weekend?" I asked Megan as she normally would leave for the weekend to go out, she paused and smiled before responding with a simple 'no'. "Spill!" I bothered her for a few minutes until she huffed then sat next to me and ate her soup. "There's a guy I met..." Megan spent the next 20 minutes telling me about this guy while I was so happy for her as she deserved the world for everything she's done. "But I don't know what to wear!" She cried as Ella woke up then asked for water.

I took care of my daughter then gave her an applesauce while she followed Megan and I to my closet. I scooted some clothes out of the way before revealing a black dress that was short and tight-fitting. "Perfect for you Megs!" She held it up as her eyes widened, "oh my Presley." "Auntie Megan so pretty!" Ella exclaimed while squealing and we all laughed.
