"Never mind the coven, the council might actually kill us." Andrin muttered.
"Yeah, no shit." I say, blowing at the base of the fire to get it going.
"Let them try." We stare at Marcus in disbelief. Red beads drips from his borne fangs as he speaks nonchalantly through a mouthful of blood. "We'll rip them apart as well." He stares Andrin down, an incendiary spark flickering in his eyes before going back to gulping down blood from the neck of one of the bodies that litter the forest floor around us.
This was supposed to be an in-and-out job. ID the target. Administer the amnesic. Get the hell out of there. It had gone wrong of course; it's not protocol for the entire strike team to be covered in the blood of the dozen or so unlucky campers who happened to be out tonight.
"Marcus." Andrin groaned despairingly, "Please, they're just kids."
To Andrin's surprise Marcus exploded up into his face, kicking the body aside. "No they're fucking not. Don't you remember what happened? They almost wiped out all of the covens within a hundred klicks of here."
I squeeze my way between them, to the relief an uncomfortable looking Andrin, "Marcus, that was nearly 200 years ago. They had nothing to do with it."
"And neither did you for that matter," Andrin muttered under his breath.
"Of course they did!" he spat. "They'll never change. Rags then. Rags now."
"That's enough Marcus." Andrin growls. He's usually so delicate, not when words like that are flung around. "No one had to die tonight. The target told one person. One. And in case it had escaped your notice we had more than enough amnesic to deal with that."
Marcus scoffs, "you're the task lead. It's on you. Hopefully now, the coven will see how useless Mattias Doma and his son really are." He marches off, furious, shoulder checking Andrin as he leaves.
"Well aren't you gonna- Oh never mind" I say, my voice trailing off. Andrin shakes his head defeated as he throws a severed torso onto the fire. We begin the arduous task of collecting up the dismembered limbs and bodies.
