Prologue: A Prophecy in Chains

The winds carried whispers through the forest of Lytheris, brushing past the ancient oaks like fingers tracing the edge of a knife. Beneath the twilight sky, two figures stood bound by fate—one, a prince born under the weight of a crown; the other, a sorcerer cursed with powers that could destroy the world.

In the castle's highest tower, the sorcerer Eryndor knelt, cold iron shackles biting into his wrists. His magic flickered weakly around him, a pale glow that pulsed with his breath—each spark a reminder of the fate he could not escape. Above him, the prophecy echoed like a curse:

"One will love. One will break. Only one may live."

Eryndor smiled bitterly, tasting the cruel irony. Love was a luxury neither of them could afford, yet somehow, it had taken root in the cracks of their war-torn souls.

As the first light of dawn crept through the barred windows, Prince Kaelen approached. His armor gleamed like the morning frost, and his gaze, usually sharp with duty, softened for the briefest moment.

"You don't have to die," Kaelen whispered, the words more plea than command.

Eryndor looked up, his silver eyes full of sorrow and something dangerously close to longing. "And if I don't?" he asked softly.

Kaelen did not answer. They both knew the truth: love was a chain, one neither could break without destroying the other.

The forest spirits had warned Kaelen—spare the sorcerer, and doom would follow. Kill him, and peace would reign. Yet here he was, standing in defiance of fate, bound to a man he should have hated.

Eryndor's breath hitched as the prince knelt beside him, their hands brushing in the dim light. For a moment, everything else—the war, the kingdom, the prophecy—ceased to matter.

But love, like all things, demanded a price. And theirs was one that fate would not let them forget.
