The house across the street was dimly lit. None of the street lights were very bright and as the sun was about to set the house grew darker. You walked across the empty street as you headed over to the gate. It had been shut down for almost a decade now but it was your next spot for your search. You had been hunting after a mysterious fog. You glanced at the fence and walked over to a hole you had seen before. The fence there was broken down. The wood had been old and rotted from the mud and humidity around the area. Good old Florida would do that. You shined your flashlight near the wooded area towards the back of the house briefly. The trees there had thick trunks with dark grey bark. They stood tall and plentiful blocking most light from entering. It was sure a creepy house and area to be in. Though this hadn't been your first attempt at trying to find the fog. You had broken into a few other areas prior. The wind bit at your face as the October chill was starting to kick in. You shivered a bit before pulling your jacket closed and then crouching under the fence. Your backpack pulled a bit at the splinters sticking out from the cedar fence. You tugged a bit and stumbled as you finally made it into the backyard. The light from the flashlight was bright and you ran the yellow hue over every corner you could before continuing. There had been a window almost near the front of the house but still facing the side fence that had been previously opened. You had noticed it before when you had just came to look at the house. Your shoes clumped with the mud under you and it stuck to the bottom of your soles. You grimaced at your now dirty shoes but it was expected. When you had reached the window you tugged the pane as open as it would go. Sliding upwards and away from the sill. The house was rather dark but you made sure to shine your flashlight before you decided to enter. You watched as items appeared under the glow of the light as you scanned it across the room. It looked like this window was for the kitchen. It was still furnished but almost everything had been covered by white cloth. It looked almost grey from the dust and grime that had settled on the fabric. Webs had been scattered in every corner and even one on the window sill. When you had decided it was safe enough you broke the web that was on the side of the window being careful that there wasn't a spider home. The sticky web was quickly wiped off on your pants before you entered the home. You had to put one leg in before putting the other and you struggled to fit in with your backpack. When you had gotten inside your feet kicked up dust into the air and you regretted not bringing some sort of mask. There could have been mold or other things worsening the air quality. You decided to take your time looking around at the empty house. You walked around the kitchen looking at the silverware that was still littered on the floor and counters. Spiders crawled in almost every direction and scurried away as your light found them. Your flashlight had stopped working for a brief moment frightening you. You shook it and knocked it's side with your other hand before it illuminated the walls again. A cream colored wallpaper covered with pink roses lined the kitchen. It was certainly an older design. Dark stains from dust gave it a worse look however. You walked over to the hallway that connected the living room and entrance. There was a coat hanger with some jackets still connected to the hooks. An old mirror that had faced the other wall and some shoes on the ground. They really hadn't taken the effort to clear it out. Your steps made quiet sounds as you headed over to the living room. Old furniture was covered in dust and a couch was covered with a white sheet. A fireplace had been across from it and still had ashes lying at the bottom. There wasn't much to see and instead you walked back to the hallway and shined your flashlight at a staircase that was against the wall of the kitchen. You made sure to check the steps for any sign of wear before you decided to climb up it. You took very careful steps and weighed each one making sure the wood wouldn't crack under your feet before continuing. It was a slow pace and you jumped a bit when your foot did weigh down a bit heavy on one of the steps. Though as long as you were careful you would probably not break it. When you had made it to the top you noticed a small red and beige rug that had lined the stairway. It led to a room in one direction and a few smaller ones to the right. You decided to head to the larger one first. A large window had illuminated the railing of the stairway as it let the moonlight in. It was much darker than you had expected it to be when you arrived here. Though it was your fault as you decided to stay late at work to finish up a few things. You took a moment to look outside of the window and stared out into the backyard. You hadn't seen it before as it wasn't visible from the front. The ground was wet and the trees lined the very back.
You jumped in your skin a bit as you turned around and shined the flashlight down the staircase. You thought that you had heard a small noise. Maybe a thump somewhere. Though it was probably just your nerves getting to you a bit. You took a deep breath and noticed as the light in your hands shook a bit from your trembling. You turned back to the large room at the end of the stairway and continued to walk towards it. The bed was still sat in the middle of the room with a dark red comforter sitting atop white sheets. It was the only thing in the house that still looked normal. On the right side of the wall there had been a dresser with a large vanity mirror on it. Left of it another large window letting in the moonlight. As well as the fresh air from outside as it had been open. The grayish curtains that hung from it flowed gently as the wind pushed it back and forth. You shivered a bit again as you regretted not wearing another layer. The left of the room had a nightstand by the bed and a closet that you didn't intend on looking in. You took another small breath before kneeling down and setting your backpack on the far too dusty ground. You unzipped the top as you took out your candle. It was your ghost hunting pack. Or that's what you liked to call it. It was stuffed with a first aid kit, extra batteries for your flashlight, a candle, some matches, and snacks. You set your backpack aside as you grabbed the matches. You tore it from the pack before striking it against the back and watched as the flame lit up your hands. You slowly leaned over and lit the candle before putting the match out. When the candle was lit you put the matches away and grabbed your flashlight. You switched it off and set it down next to you as the room grew darker. You waited for a moment for your eyes to adjust to the darkness before you began.
"If there is anyone here show yourself," you said aloud into the dark room. It felt a bit silly at first talking to yourself out loud. Though you knew it wasn't as you had definitely seen things before. Things that you couldn't even begin to describe. You waited silently for anything to appear. The wind blew in the curtains and the lit on the candle flickered a bit. Though nothing had changed and you felt a bit disappointed. You just had to keep trying something would have to appear. There was probably a ghost around here somewhere. "I'm only here to try to talk so please if there is anything-" you began again to speak aloud. Though as you were about to finish speaking the wind had blown stronger and suddenly your candle light had gone out. The slightly dim room had no almost gone pitch black besides the moonlight that seeped in from the curtains. Fear had coursed through you as you leaned over and placed your hands on the dirty floor. You moved them about searching for your flashlight only to not find it. Just as your hand had knocked into it a flash appeared from behind you out of nowhere. Your body froze as you turned to stone. You were still leaned over a bit and didn't dare to move. There had been a flash of light. You were certain of it. Just when you had decided that maybe you were just frightened it happened again. A small click could be heard and a flash lit up the room before you in an instant. The light went away almost as quickly as it had appeared. Though that didn't seem like something a ghost would do. With shaky hands you grabbed your flashlight from the ground. It made a bit of noise as it knocked against the wood floor before you slowly brought it up. As you flicked the light on you let out a shaky breath. You were terrified to turn around and see what was there. Though maybe this was what you had come looking for. You turned your body slowly as you stood up from the ground and stood up on your now weak legs. Your knees had hurt a bit from being knelt down on the wooden floor. As you turned and shined the light you felt the blood leave your face.
There before you stood a gaping white mask with black holes for the eyes and mouth. At first you didn't believe what you were seeing. Far too frightened at what you had just laid your eyes on. A horror had filled your stomach and your insides twisted. You didn't dare move as you felt whatever this monster was it would surely lunge at you. The face stared back at you unmoving and entirely silent. It stood tall in the doorway and another blow from the wind chilled you. Just when you thought it couldn't get any more frightening it began to speak. A low tone rumbled and filled the quiet space between you and it.
"What's the matter? You look like you've seen a ghost," it had said with a dark tone. You almost hadn't registered what it had said as you were too shocked to focus on it. Though you noticed it move slightly towards you as your light from your flashlight stayed firmly on it. You had finally broken out of your trance as you took a step back in fear. It felt like some sort of odd terrifying stand off as it paused. "You're really just gonna stand there? I was hoping for more of a chase," it said. It lunged at you quickly not giving you any time to react. The face had almost disappeared from the light from your flashlight as it neared and suddenly as you tried to dodge it you felt arms push you backwards. You yelped as your body hit the hardwood floor and you felt it's weight on top of you. Your body had finally decided to kick into gear as a course of adrenaline flowed through you. Your grip tightened fiercely around the metal flashlight in your hand as you swung it towards the specters face. It hit harshly against his skull and you could hear a loud thump. A sigh had seeped out from the ghost as it was knocked back harshly. He stumbled away from you as you got up and ran behind him and grabbed your backpack. You took off quickly and heard his loud footsteps thump behind you. Your breath was short as you felt your heart race began to pick up. You slid on the rug that lined the staircase and quickly grabbed the railing to steady yourself before swinging around and running down the staircase. It was close behind and as the footsteps got louder you panicked. You stomped down onto the step below the last and broke through the wood. You flew face forward dropping your flashlight and you felt your ankle twist as you landed palm first on the ground. You let out a scream at the pain that had coursed through your leg. The weight from your backpack moved forward and slid your jacket upwards a bit. When you turned to look at your ankle you froze again as you noticed it standing atop the staircase and peering down at you. It was then that you had realized that it was no ghost. It was a man in some sort of long dastardly coat and horrible mask. It almost terrified you even more as you felt the blood in your veins freeze. You noticed the moonlight reflect and glint off of something he had at his side. When you realized that he had a large knife held in his grip you panicked again. You tried to pull your foot from the wood in the staircase but it seemed stuck. You began crying out and sobbing as the man slowly took steps down the staircase. Desperately you grabbed your leg with both your hands and tugged harder finally pulling it from the wood. As you stumbled back onto the floor the man approached quickly. You leaned back and reached for your flashlight turning it on and shining it directly into his eyes blinding him momentarily. He lunged for you again but this time you were prepared and you knocked him over as you tripped him over your foot. You turned quickly limping as you tried running towards the open window in the kitchen. Suddenly you felt a hand on the back of your weak ankle and you fell forward again keeping a hold of your flashlight. You turned around as you felt his crushing weight hold you down. His hand held your arm down as his other raised the knife above your head. The glint from the moonlight almost gave the blade a blueish hue as it shined above you. The blade was long and you shivered as you watched it glow above you. You moved your hand upwards to try and defended yourself. His blade moved downwards towards you and as you tried to block it the blade sliced through your skin. It tore downwards from your inner left palm and tugged down your wrist before curving off to the side. You screamed out in pain and the cold feeling of the blade. Just as he was about to lift his arm again you managed to break your right arm free from his grasp and you struck your flashlight against the side of his face. He leaned back and it gave you just enough room to push yourself up before you headed towards the window.
You limped towards the window as your ankle felt too sensitive to run on fully. You gripped the window sill and threw your left leg over first with your injured ankle before pulling yourself through the window. The back of your backpack had gotten caught again and you struggled to pull yourself through. You cried out as you heard him near again and his footsteps running towards you. Just as you felt his gloved hand graze your other arm you had gotten out of the other side. You bolted off towards the hole in the gate no longer caring about your ankle. The adrenaline seemed to push the pain aside momentarily as you continued to run. You ducked under the splintered wood before running towards the streetlights. It was dark out now and the street lamps barely illuminated the road. You ran forward with heavy breaths until your feet finally hit the road. You darted your head in every direction looking for cars or people but the street was rather empty. The houses all had their lights off and the cars were parked neatly across their doorway. You turned your head back momentarily to see if he had still been chasing you.
The white mask that he had been wearing stared at you from near the back of the house. He didn't follow you out into the street. He stood there staring at you and for a moment you stared back. The pain in your ankle started to form again and you turned back around and began to run away from his view. You had to get home as soon as you could. You ran for as long as you could with your backpack bouncing at every step you took. When you could no longer hear him or see him you decided it would be ok to walk. You walked quickly despite your injured ankle and arm. You glanced down at the torn skin across your palm and wrist. The blood glistened in the moonlight as it streaked down your arm and had gotten on your jacket a bit. It looked rather bad but it hadn't cut too deep thankfully. It mainly just broke through skin. Despite it being rather surface level it still stung and you pressed it against your jacket to try and staunch the bleeding. The walk home felt a lot longer than the walk to the house. Though it was only a few blocks away. When you finally made it to your small home you walked up to the brown door that was framed against the blue colored exterior and pulled out your keys from your pocket. You sifted through them until you found your house key and unlocked the door. You stopped for a moment however before entering and decided to look behind you. The street was better lit up and you didn't see him hiding anywhere. You pushed your front door open and took a deep breath as you closed and locked it behind you. You wanted to fall to the ground in exhausting but instead you dropped your backpack and walked over to the kitchen grabbing a chair and propping it up against the front door handle. You made sure that the small back glass sliding door had also been locked and closed the curtains. With another heavy breath you sat down on your living room floor. You didn't bother sitting on the couch as you were covered in dirt and grime. The bleeding in your arm had thankfully stopped but you knew you would have to bandage it anyways. You sat up a bit and pulled off your jacket and set your keys down. You grabbed the small pocket knife that you usually kept in your right pocket and set it down. You brought it mainly for utility purposes but also for self defense. Though you didn't seem to get any time to even try and pull it out against your attacker. At least your metal flashlight seemed to do a good number on him. You looked around your empty living room a bit paranoid and making sure he wasn't somehow there. The beige carpet blended in with the brown couch that you had in your living room. The long coffee table that was set across from the couch still had all of your articles and papers messily laid across it. Your pens had been disorganized and your water cup had gotten some of the papers wet. You looked up at the TV set on a small entertainment center with some knickknacks you had gotten at an antique store. You were home and away from him and yet you couldn't help the fear that coursed through you. You took a few deep breaths and when your heart started to slow you could feel the tears well in your eyes. It didn't take long before you were sobbing and shaking uncontrollably in the living room. You were home and you were safe you tried to remind yourself. It was going to be okay.
