Chapter 9: introductions

Start from the beginning

At one point, after another round of pleasantries, I led her away from the crowd, toward a quieter corner of the room. She looked at me with narrowed eyes, her lips tight.

"I'm not some prize to be shown off," she said, her voice barely above a whisper but filled with fire.

I smirked, leaning in closer. "No, you're not. But you are mine, and they needed to know that."

Her gaze flickered with something anger, maybe. Or was it something deeper? I couldn't quite place it.

"I didn't ask for this, Adrian," she said softly, though her tone lacked the usual bite.

"No," I agreed. "But you accepted it."

She exhaled, her shoulders slumping ever so slightly. The fight was still there, but she was tired. I could see it in her eyes, hear it in the way her voice wavered just a little. I stepped closer, my hand grazing her lower back, guiding her toward the bar where I handed her a glass of champagne.

"Drink," I said. "You need to relax."

She glared at me but took the glass, sipping slowly. Her eyes scanned the room again, as if searching for a way out. But there was no escape. Not now. Not from this.

The band shifted to a slower tune, the music filling the space between us. I watched as couples began to drift toward the dance floor. For a moment, I simply stood there, observing her, noting the subtle changes in her expression. The way she wrestled with herself.

I extended my hand to her. "Dance with me."

Her eyes snapped to mine, surprise flickering there for a brief moment before it was replaced with her usual defiance. "Do I have a choice?"

"Not tonight," I said, my voice calm but firm.

After a long pause, she placed her hand in mine. I pulled her close, feeling the tension still humming through her, though she didn't pull away. The music guided our movements as we swayed in unison, her head resting near my chest, her warmth seeping into me.

"This isn't what I wanted," she whispered, repeating her words barely audible over the soft melody.

"I know," I said, my voice low, my lips near her ear. "But it's what you need."

She lifted her head slightly, her eyes meeting mine. "And what about you? What do you want, Adrian?"

I didn't answer right away. Her question hung in the air, but there was no simple response. Because what I wanted, what I needed, were two very different things. I wanted her. But I knew having her, truly having her meant risking everything. And I wasn't sure she was ready for that.

Instead, I tightened my hold on her, guiding her closer as the music swirled around us.

"I want you safe," I finally said, my voice rougher than I intended.

She looked up at me, her eyes searching mine. But I knew she wouldn't find the answers she was looking for. Because this wasn't just about protection anymore. It was about something more dangerous something neither of us was ready to admit.

But tonight, none of that mattered.

The night continued to unfold around us, the rhythm of the ballroom pulsing with life. I could feel Serefina's tension simmering just beneath the surface, her body still stiff against mine as we danced. It was time to introduce her to another layer of my world my family.

I led her away from the dance floor, noticing how her grip tightened on my hand, a mix of excitement and anxiety swirling in her gaze. I could sense the uncertainty within her; meeting my family was a big step, one that would pull her deeper into this life we were carving out together.

"Adrian," she said, her voice laced with hesitation, "where are we going?"

"To meet my brother," I replied, keeping my tone light but firm. "He's been looking forward to this."

"Your brother?" she echoed, her eyes widening slightly. "What does he think about all this?"

I chuckled softly, knowing my brother had a flair for the dramatic. "He's younger and has quite grasped the reality of our world and he's excited to meet you."

As we approached a private lounge area off to the side of the main ballroom, I could hear the familiar voice of my brother, Dmitri, echoing in laughter. He had a way of lightening the mood, a stark contrast to the darkness that often surrounded our lives.

"Adrian!" Dmitri exclaimed, spotting us as we entered. His gaze landed on Serefina, and his smile widened. "Is this the infamous Serefina? I've heard so much about you!"

Serefina looked at me, and I could see the mixture of surprise and intrigue in her expression. "Infamous?" she asked, arching an eyebrow.

Dmitri stepped forward, his youthful energy infectious. "Well, Adrian doesn't talk about people often, but when he does, it's usually in a tone that sounds like he's keeping something secret. So, it's only fitting that I finally meet the woman who's made him this... mysterious."

I shot my brother a warning look, but there was no malice in his teasing. Serefina was an enigma to him, just as she was to me.

"Dmitri," I warned lightly, "don't scare her off."

Serefina laughed softly, breaking the tension that had hung between us all night. "It's okay. I can handle it."

Dmitri grinned, his gaze flickering back to me before focusing on her. "So, tell me, what's it like being married to my brother? Is he as serious as he seems?"

I rolled my eyes, but the warmth in my chest grew as I watched Serefina navigate the conversation with ease. "He's not always serious," she replied, casting a playful glance in my direction. "He has his moments."

"Moments?" Dmitri chuckled. "I'd like to see those moments. My brother is usually a walking wall of stoicism."

"Just wait until you get to know her," I interjected, my voice low and filled with sincerity. "She has a way of getting through the walls I've built."

Serefina's expression softened, and I caught the hint of a smile on her lips. She seemed to revel in the newfound camaraderie with my brother, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. This was her world now too, and I wanted her to embrace it.

"Adrian talks a lot about duty and responsibility, but I can tell he's not as cold as he pretends to be," she said, her eyes glinting with mischief.

Dmitri nodded enthusiastically. "See? You're already getting through to him. Keep it up, and I might just let you take the lead in our family!"

I raised an eyebrow, the corners of my mouth twitching in a suppressed smile. "Just remember, Dmitri, she's my wife now. I'm the one in charge here."

"Of course, big brother," he said, holding his hands up in mock surrender. "But I'm sure Serefina will keep you on your toes."

The laughter continued to flow, and I watched as Serefina relaxed more, her earlier apprehension melting away in the warmth of my brother's charm. It was a relief to see her comfortable, to know that she was finding a place within my family, however unconventional it may be.

"Let's toast," I suggested, motioning to the small bar tucked in the corner of the lounge. "To new beginnings."

Serefina picked up a glass, Dmitri joining in as we raised our drinks. "To new beginnings," Serefina echoed, her gaze flickering between us.

As we clinked our glasses together, I felt a surge of hope. The path ahead would be fraught with challenges, but tonight, we were a family. In this moment, Serefina was not just a pawn in my game.  she was my partner, standing alongside me as we navigated this life together.

And I intended to protect that bond fiercely.
