Chapter 40: Hello? Hello Hello?

Start from the beginning

I actively watch as her expression begins to soften. Slowly, through my words, I am able to make her feel confident once again.

''Commander...'' She mustered, clearly embarrassed from being talked to like that. ''T-Thank you... I'll try even harder, I promise!''

I snort and ruffle her hair, which gets yet another cute reaction out of her. ''H-Hey!'' She laughs, enjoying herself. ''T-That tickles, stop it!''

I smile as I pull my hand away. ''I had to do something.'' I tell her. ''That frown really didn't suit you. And from what I know, that's my secret weapon to dealing with sadness.''

''W-Well,'' She once again began, fixing her hair and glasses. ''that really did cheer me up. Thanks, Commander.''

''Anytime.'' I turn around and proceed to walk back to the place I came from.

And once I am there, I sit down on the floor with my back against the wall and begin my internal conversations with the two entities inside my head.

''So what should we talk about?''

There really isn't much to go off of, really. I mean, the most you'd get out of two amnesiacs and a brat is probably a migraine.

''H-Hey!''

''I have a proposition.''

Oh? What is it, Lilith?

''Well, I think it is about time you told me about that Deputy Chief.''

''After all, you did promise you would.''

Ah... Well, alright then.

But in turn, you'd have to tell me about what you remembered. Deal?

''I'm fine with that.''

''Lore time.''

That's the second time you say that.

''I know.''

Ahem.

So, Andersen, right? He's like my boss in a way, even though I sometimes feel like doesn't treat me that way.

Honestly, it's embarrassing to admit, but he oddly feels like a father to me.

''Oh?''

''Yeah, he's one of the few people I respect. He has done so many great things for Father, more than I can count!''

I haven't heard you count past three, so that's probably true.

Anyway. He is, as you know, a Deputy Chief. I'm not sure what his age is, but I can guarantee you that he's on the older side. Even though his looks say otherwise.

He's always busy, having his schedule filled with one meeting after the other. So I don't get to see him off work a lot of times.

When problems begin to show up, he immediately clears his schedule and calls me in. At this point, I'm sure Counters have become his primary unit of operation.

He just... I dunno, adores us? Even though he's very secretive about it, we all know he's just hiding it.

He may seem cold at times, but once you get to know him, he becomes way easier to read and converse with.

He's saved my skin on multiple occasions.

Given me many raises.

Gifts and whatnot.
