Then, almost as if in response to the mooncalves' stillness, the ground in the center of the circle began to glow. Slowly, a path began to reveal itself, leading away from the clearing and deeper into the forest, its edges glowing brighter in the moonlight.
Fidelity's breath caught in her throat as she watched. "That must be it—the hidden path. This is what the note was pointing us to."
"But where does it lead?" Ava asked, her voice tinged with curiosity.
Fidelity glanced at her friend, then back at the path. Her earlier hesitation flared up again. "I'm not sure... Maybe we should think about this—what if it's dangerous?"
Ava gave her a reassuring smile, placing a hand on her shoulder. "We've come this far, Fidelity. We could turn back now but I don't think we should."
Taking a deep breath, Fidelity nodded, her resolve hardening. Ava always had a way of helping Fidelity to feel brave, to face her fears. "Okay... let's go."
Together, they made their way toward the glowing path, their hearts pounding in sync with the pulse of the forest around them. As they stepped onto the path, the air around them seemed to change, growing colder and more charged with energy. The trees whispered secrets in the wind, and Fidelity could feel the magic humming beneath her feet, guiding them forward.
The path twisted and turned, leading them deeper into the forest, away from the clearing and the mooncalf dance. Every so often, Fidelity glanced over at Ava, finding reassurance in her presence, even in this strange and uncertain place.
After what felt like an eternity, the path finally ended at the base of a towering tree, its roots sprawling out like ancient fingers clutching the earth. A faint light glimmered at its base, drawing them closer.
"What do you think it is?" Ava asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Fidelity knelt down, brushing away some leaves to reveal a small, weathered box partially buried beneath the roots. Her heart raced as she gently pulled it free and opened it.
Inside the box lay an old, tattered piece of parchment. Fidelity carefully unfolded it, revealing a map of the Forbidden Forest, with a location marked deep within its heart. Beside the map was a small, silver pendant, intricately engraved with a crescent moon.
"This must be what the note was leading us to," Fidelity murmured, her eyes wide with awe.
Ava leaned in to get a closer look. "But what does it mean? And what's that place on the map?"
Fidelity shook her head slowly. "I don't know... but I think we're going to have to find out."
Fidelity stared at the map in her hands, the weight of the discovery pressing down on her shoulders. The marked location was deep within the Forbidden Forest, far beyond the safety of the castle walls. She traced the route with her finger, trying to memorize the twists and turns that led to the mysterious spot.
Ava glanced around nervously, the shadows of the forest seeming to grow longer and darker with every passing second. "We should head back to the castle, Fidi. It's getting late, and we need time to figure out what this all means."
Fidelity hesitated, the pendant glinting softly in the light of her wand. "But what if this place on the map is connected to the note? What if whatever we're supposed to find is time-sensitive, just like the ceremony? We can't just leave it here."
Ava's expression softened, understanding the conflict raging within her friend. "We'll come back, I promise. But right now, it's too risky. We need to be prepared if we're going to go deeper into the forest."
