“You may leave.” Kitt said, voice booming and echoing through the room. The crowd fell silent, before quickly filing out of the room, not a word was uttered until they were all cleared out.
Kai turned to leave-
“I did not mean you, enforcer.” He said in more of a normal tone, not shouting over the murmuring of the crowd any longer. Kitt said it without making eye contact. His eyes still focused on me. The Traitor. The one who killed his father. The girl who made him king. Why would he want me? None of it made sense.
The crowd had finally finished exiting the room, leaving Kitt to stare into my eyes with a fierceness and intensity I had never seen before from him. Kai watched me from his place standing next to the throne.
I dared to give Kai one quick glance before turning back to Kitt. His eyes sparkled with unshed tears. The look on his face crushed my very soul. He wouldn’t take his eyes off of me.I look down at the floor before meeting Kitt’s eyes again. They changed from the intense green that reminded me so much of the former king, to now a softer, more inquisitive appearance.
“So… what is your answer, Paedyn Gray?” His hand still outstretched with the box.
“No.” I say softly. “Marriage is for those who love each other. A union between two individuals for all of time. Without love what would marriage be? So no. I would rather die than marry a man I didn’t love.” I turn my gaze back to the white marble floors. Shiny and glistening, reflecting my face like a mirror.
“Pretty girl with pretty words.” Kai whispers from where he stands. I look up to see tears running down his face, a small slow smile spreading across his lips. Not big enough to reveal his dimples, but still visible.
