I took in a deep breath of the fresh air as we drove on the highway the window were rolled down making our hair whip in the wind. My twin sister sat at the passenger seat looking out the window at the scenery before us while the radio played music from our favorite station. Once the song ended, the announcer came on "Good afternoon everyone!" they said in a cheery voice "we have a severe thunderstorm warning taking effect tonight at 6pm and will not end until 9am tomorrow morning. expect power outages. Todays forecast is a high of 83 and a low of 75. this is Bob Dillan with your 24 hour weather alerts." It slipped into commercials I turned off the radio and tsked "Bummer" I said "and to think I was going to barbeque outside." My twin sister, Core, looked over at me " Yeah I was actually looking forward to that Diana you can make some badass brisket." I looked over at her puffed up a little with pride and grinned "ya dam right I do." we both laughed then Core said "Well in that case I'm going to the garage and keep working on that project." We exited the highway toward the busier streets of Albuquerque, New Mexico. We drove through the downtown streets and we stopped at a stop light I looked over to her with a raised eyebrow. "Dude we just got out from the military not even a month ago and all you want to do is work?" I shook my head in disbelief she just shrugged and giggled "what can I say I love tinkering." I saw from the corner of my eye how she had her arms crossed looking straight ahead she had a dark look on her eyes her face scrunched up in deep thought her arms her crossed while looking through the driver window.
I sighed. She's been like this ever since we left the military she's been quiet and distant always spending time in the garage and going to bed late. I drove threw the streets of finding the one led to our house it sat on a hill over looking the town. We would sometimes whenever the sun was setting we would sit on the porch and, while drinking an ice cold beer, watch the town be bathed in the fiery red and orange as the horizon light would fade and the darkness slowly enveloped the sky the stars popping into existence the town lights twinkling in the dusk. We pulled into our drive way Core was about to get out, until I grabbed her arm.
"Core."
She turned and looked at me with a guilty look on her face like she got caught stealing candy from the store.
"You've been distant lately spending more time in the garage I can tell something was bothering you ever since we left the Military. Dude whatever it is that is bothering you so much I know we can face it together." I squeezed her arm reassuringly she looked down and settled back in her seat. She rubbed her eye and pinched the bridge of her nose. "Look I'm sorry its just hard to explain I don't know how to tell you without sounded like a crazy person." I moved my hand to her shoulder and laughed. "Core we've been through so much together we fought in battles and faced certain death multiple times I would never think your crazy." I paused and thought a moment smiling "actually if you think about it, were both crazy." We both laughed I was glad that she was cheering up.
She sighed "Alright after dinner I'll show you what I've been working on. It's a big deal and I want you to be apart of it." My face lit up with curiosity I looked out my driver window and from the horizon, I saw the dark clouds coming towards us the lighting flashing in the clouds. " Come on" I said "Let's get inside before the storm on us." She nodded we quickly unloaded the car of our luggage we just came from a small trip visiting some close relatives in Arizona Aunt Mutrid and our younger cousin (her son) Chris. we put our bag in our rooms and started to freshen up in our separate bathrooms. Once I had finished, I changed into a red t-shirt and some black shorts. I made my way to the kitchen and started preparing dinner. Soon after I started, my sister joins me in the kitchen she's wearing something similar to mine instead of red it was a sky blue color with grey shorts. I cut the vegetables while my sister boiled the pasta in chicken broth and explaining to me what she was working on "It's hard to explain really...its just I've been having these weird dreams lately I get these weird images of pieces of equipment and a voice telling me what to do even when I'm awake..." She trailed off she had that look in her eyes. I've only seen that look a few times during our deployment in the military. that was the look of pure determination. I scooped up the vegetables and threw then in the pot we were making old fashioned chicken noodle soup fitting for the storm we were about to have
