June sat on the edge of the dock, his feet dangling just above the cool surface of the lake. The sun was starting to set, casting a warm orange glow across the water and making the surrounding trees look like they were on fire. The air was thick with the scents of summer—freshly cut grass, blooming flowers, and the distant smoke of a barbecue. June loved this time of year, when school was out and the long days seemed to stretch endlessly before him.

He sighed, glancing back at the camp behind him. The place was buzzing with energy as kids ran around, shouting and laughing. This was his second year as a counselor at Camp Evergreen, a job he cherished more than anything. It wasn't just about the paycheck; it was about the freedom, the friendships, and the memories he was making. But this year felt different. He couldn't quite put his finger on why, but something had shifted.

June leaned back on his hands, closing his eyes and letting the sounds of the camp wash over him. He thought about the new group of counselors who had arrived a few days ago. Most of them were familiar faces, returning for another summer of fun and responsibility. But there was one new guy—Yuri.

Yuri was different from anyone June had ever met. He was tall, with jet-black hair that fell into his eyes and a quiet demeanor that intrigued June. From the moment he had introduced himself, June had felt an inexplicable pull towards him. Yuri didn't say much, but when he did, it was with a kind of intensity that made June hang on every word.

"Hey, June!" a voice called out, snapping him back to reality. June opened his eyes to see his best friend, Max, jogging towards him. Max had been June's partner-in-crime since they were kids, and their friendship had only grown stronger over the years.

"Hey, Max," June replied, sitting up straighter. "What's up?"

Max flopped down beside him, slightly out of breath. "You won't believe it. We're having a campfire tonight, and guess who's in charge of setting it up?"

"Let me guess," June said with a grin. "You?"

"Yup. And you're helping," Max declared, clapping him on the back. "Come on, it'll be fun."

June laughed, getting to his feet. "Alright, alright. Lead the way."

As they walked back towards the main camp area, June couldn't help but glance around, hoping to catch a glimpse of Yuri. He felt a flutter of excitement when he spotted him near the mess hall, chatting with another counselor. Yuri looked up and their eyes met for a brief moment. June felt his cheeks heat up and quickly looked away, hoping Max hadn't noticed.

The evening flew by in a blur of activity. June and Max gathered firewood, set up benches, and made sure everything was ready for the campers. As the sky darkened, the fire roared to life, casting flickering shadows on the faces of everyone gathered around.

June found himself sitting across from Yuri, who was listening intently as one of the older counselors told a ghost story. The firelight danced in Yuri's eyes, making them look almost golden. June's heart raced, and he wondered if Yuri could hear it over the crackling of the fire and the murmurs of the crowd.

When the story ended, everyone clapped and cheered, and the atmosphere lightened. Someone started strumming a guitar, and soon the air was filled with music and laughter. June felt a tap on his shoulder and turned to see Yuri standing there, a shy smile on his lips.

"Mind if I sit here?" Yuri asked.

June nodded, trying to keep his voice steady. "Of course, go ahead."

Yuri sat down next to him, and for a moment, they just listened to the music in comfortable silence. June wanted to say something, anything, to keep the conversation going, but his mind was a jumble of thoughts.

Finally, Yuri spoke. "I've never been to a campfire like this. It's...nice."

"Yeah, it is," June agreed. "There's something special about it. It feels like we're all connected, you know?"

Yuri nodded, his eyes meeting June's again. "Yeah, I do."

They lapsed into silence once more, but this time it felt different. There was a warmth between them, a silent understanding that neither of them could quite explain. As the night wore on and the fire burned low, June knew one thing for certain—this summer was going to be unlike any other, and Yuri was the reason why.
