"He's here, my love"
I felt my husband's warm hand brush through my brown hair hanging loose and frizzy, thanks to the damp English temperature, over my shoulders.
"Sebastian is here", Ominis whispered, his voice barely reaching me.
"I know", I replied with my voice just as soft, anticipation, not the only feeling creeping up my spine. Dread, fear and anger were among them. And, longing, terrible longing.
I have not seen Sebastian since the House Cup in our 5th year. He disappeared with no goodbye or trace of where to find him. After searching for him throughout our 6th year, Ominis and I gave up, letting the drift that Sebastian opened grow.
He may have been out of sight but never left our minds.
A firm knocking on the door announced Sebastian like it was the most normal announcement of a guest's arrival at our small house up the hill in Feldcroft. Sebastian never disappeared, and he comes by almost every single day to spend time with his friends who once considered him family.
The blasting red glow flickered in front of my eyes from the day our fates were changed forever.
The day Ranrok tried to destroy the repository to claim all of the ancient power that once Isadora Morganach stored by goblin construction.
The day Professor Fig died in effort to stop Ranrok and save me.
The day Sebastian was claiming the ancient power for himself to use the magic to save Anne. But his painful cries had distracted me from hovering over Professor Fig's body. They were a cry for help because the magic had been too much for Sebastian. His body could not carry it but as stubborn as he was, he was not going to let the opportunity go to waste as he knew I would never allow him to get near to the repository again.
So instead of stopping him, I took my stance next to him and took half of the ancient magic, claiming it mine.
I was a fool back then, a lovesick fool who was scared of losing one more person she loved and cared for.
I had not noticed how the door opened, if Ominis was the one to open the door or if Sebastian had invited himself inside. The memory of his exhausted expression vanished to a more mature-looking Sebastian standing right in front of me. The brown curls were falling over his forehead just as they were 10 years ago, but the prominent jaw and cheekbones made him remarkably even more handsome looking in his teenage years.
Was all of this even real? Or was I dreaming yet again in search of a cure? Or memories were perhaps haunting me again, mixing the past and possible further outcomes.
"Well, hello there", Sebastian greeted with a smile of his own that did not reach his eyes. And I could not respond, the knot in my throat only growing bigger.
"Sebastian, welcome. Eileen and I are really happy you accepted our invitation", Ominis cut in to save me from the drilling gaze of our old friend. I broke the eye contact first and looked over to my best friend, to my husband who was turned towards the reaction of Sebastian. Ominis' blindness is one of the first things one notices as he does not hide it behind a dark pair of glasses. It was his normality, just as seeing colours was normal for me. But it still impressed me from time to time how sharp his other senses worked to fill in the lack of visuals and how he recognized the presence of anyone close to him. How must it feel for him to recognize the presence of his former best friend? Did it feel any different than the last time he was him?
