Familiarity was something everyone found peace in. A concept that never diverged a majority, but brought them together in the form of comfort and understanding. Almost nothing that was ever unfamiliar left a feeling of tranquility.

Throughout the lives of many people often take shelter with these thoughts to keep their minds from roaming to things that are truly questioned. Religion brung peace to those who followed it, family brung peace to those who learned to love each other despite hardships.

Familiarity is something everyone finds peace in, but spontaneity plagues it.

"Our mother called last night." Marsai sighed joining me in the kitchen. I felt a shiver take over me as I tried to concentrate on the half diced fruit on the cutting board in front of me. The mentioning of our mother in any circumstance triggered something deep within me, like I could feel the nagging presence of her at all times.

I glanced over in her direction as I watched her sit at the table. "Did you answer?"

"Nah, but she did leave a message." The younger girl noted. She reach over the table to replay the voice mail before sitting back down.

"Good Evening Ulani, I'm sure you seen my calls coming through and decided to ignore them like always. I'm only sending this because I'm coming over sometime this week and I want you to be prepared." My mother's voice blared through the kitchen. A look of disdain was present on my face as the voice mail finished.

The voice of my mother always tugged at my heart strings in a way. Her voice destroyed the freedom and confidence that I've created for myself long after I moved out. Why I gave her my number I don't know, but maybe it's because I still seek validation from the woman I call my mother at heart.

"How is she just gonna show up without askin'?" Marsai seethed.

I barely notice her voice as I can feel myself slipping into a deep thought. One taken over by exasperation and loathe. The relieving atmosphere in my headspace replaced by perturbed as it fogged my brain. Nothing pleasant ever came from the presence of my mother and father, they never treated their children with any form of care or love. Everyone has a mother and father, but not everyone has a mom and dad.

"You here to pick up your check?" Leon asked as I stood before him in his office. His fingers grazed the oak wood desk, his eyes staring down at the papers on it.

"Yea I'm here for that, and I also wanted to ask you something." I admitted arrogantly. He hummed apathetically in response and reached over to hand me the awaited check.
