My job hunt hasn't been the best. So far, I've been turned down by every place I've been to and I've been to 6 so far. There were various reasons and some I understand like not having jobs available or just not being in the position to take in someone who isn't experienced. But there have been 2 particular shops that turned me down and I have a feeling sexism played a part in that decision.

I felt like I was being looked down on. Seeing only men were working in the shop, at least for the time I was there, did not help the feeling I had. I felt uneasy for most of the time I was there. I'm kind of glad I didn't get a job. I don't want a job at those places because I just didn't feel safe. I felt that I was seen as someone less then, pitiful, weak, incapable and I hated that.

I already have bad experiences with tattoos, and I've fought so hard not to let them ruin my dreams of becoming a tattoo artist. Working there would just cause me to spiral and feel so paranoid. I'm already somewhere where I am susceptible to danger because of my living circumstances and my gender, I don't need anything added to the mix.

Now it is my third day of job hunting and I'm about to walk into my 7th shop. When I walk up to the shop, I immediately notice It has a sticker like design on the front glass door of silver/metal wings and blue hues with the word "ICARUS" at the top. I can't help but take a moment to appreciate it.

When I walk in the mood is immediately set with low music humming in the background. The inside has an older feel with the flooring and design choices. This is what I envision when I think of an older tattoo shop. There are some designs hung on the wall, signs that say "tattoos and piercings" and "Custom tattoos" hung onto a wooden desk like structure to welcome clients.

I look around and the inside is a rectangular shape with 6 doorways branching off. One of them being open I can see that it leads to a bathroom. In the middle, there is a brown leather couch that looks like it's tattooed somehow and a coffee table.

After looking around and not seeing anyone I notice a bell on the wooden structure and ring it.

After several moments a tall tan guy walks out. He is beautiful, with big brown eyes, a lean but muscular body with tattoos filling his arms. It's almost like the ink is spilling out of his t-shirt.

When he's about to reach where I am standing, I speak,

"Good morning! My name is Lila, and I was wondering if I could speak to the owner about getting a job" I try to sound as knowledgeable as possible but also casual.

"Good morning, I'm the owner, Zayn. What job are ya looking for?" The first thing I notice is his accent.

"Nice to meet you, I'm actually here for a job as a tattoo artist. I don't have any experience besides me and my friends, but I promise I am a fast learner." I say already having this conversation 6 times prior and I really want an opportunity. I continue "I brought my portfolio, please take a look at it" I offer him my artwork that's in a black leather folder.
