Time check: 3:30 pm
I was drawing in class before the lecture began and the rest of my classmates were suddenly scurrying from their friends to separate places around the class. "Excuse me," I heard a voice come from my left. "Is this seat taken?"
Was I dreaming? I took my earbuds out immediately, and shook my head. There were plenty of open seats and this angel of a human being decided to sit next to me. He didn't seem the type to be a business major – he looked like a music major. He had long, slender hands and a face that looked like he should be either modeling or acting.
He smiled at me and put his bag down (a messenger bag–how cute! I thought to myself briefly,) and took the seat next to me. "So..." he mumbled as the professor began to speak. He looked down at my sketchbook, covered in various sketches and small words and my phone next to it with a reference on display. "You make art too?" He questioned. If I wrote a million small words on my paper about how I felt in this moment, nothing would compare to how I feel right now with my heart beating a million paces a minute.
I nodded again. Why was I being so quiet today? I thought to myself, I'm gonna seem cold if I don't say anything... "O-oh, yeah! I, uh, I draw a lot! Do you?" I slipped my pencil back and forth in my hand, sliding it back and forth between my fingers.
The angel nodded. "Yep! I paint most of the time," he said softly, showing me his paint-stained hands. The small dots of (probably) splattered paint had coated his hands and they looked like they had just dried. "As you can see," he flipped his hands to show the backs of them, "I do it really often."
I chuckled. "I see what you mean," I said. Oh my goodness, I'm having an actual conversation with a hot guy for the first time... Yuti's gonna explode when I tell her this. "I mostly do sketches, but I paint whenever I have time." I showed him my graphite-covered hands, expecting him to have the same response I did. What I wasn't expecting was for him to literally take my hand and observe the graphite smudges on the sides and back of my hands, as well as my fingertips.
I turned red as he continued looking over my hands. "You have nice hands," he smiled softly at me and I nearly died right then and there. "Artists always have nice hands."
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah. After a while, you kind of become able to tell normal people's hands from an artist's hands," he said, "Same with people who play music, they also have different hands." I nodded to the information, then realized one thing.
"That's pretty cool," I said. A couple of moments passed in calm, awkward silence. "By the way," I slid my hand away and put it back on my desk, "What's your name? I'm Jiya."
He seemed to have the same realization and I did and nodded. "Hyunjin. I like your name, Jiya."
I felt my cheeks start to burn and smiled. "Really? Thank you. I like your name too."
"Hey! You two in the back!" The professor groaned. "Please shut up! You can flirt with each other outside of my lecture."
Hyunjin and I looked at each other and immediately looked away, both of our faces bright red.
TIME SKIP - AFTER CLASS ((5:52 p.m.))
"Hyunjin," I stood up as I packed my things to leave the classroom. He looked up at me and smiled.
"What's up?" He asked.
"Do you wanna study together? We could get to know each other and become proper friends," I said with a smile. "There's an internet cafe I frequent, so we could go there."
Hyunjin's face lit up and he looked like a happy ferret. "Sure! Let me, like, pack my stuff up first though."
I nodded. "Oh yeah, duh." I chuckled nervously. "My bad, I'll wait for you outside the building, yeah?"
Hyunjin's head snapped up and his gaze met mine. "No, it's fine... just wait here!" He smiled. "We can walk out together."
I nodded and stood next to him as he packed his stuff into his backpack. I checked my watch and realized we didn't have much time before they closed today. "Oh... it's almost 6. They close at 6:15," I mumbled, a small frown coming across my face. "Can we just go some other time?" I asked.
He seemed a little disappointed too as we walked out of the building. "Aw. I was really looking forward to checking out that place." A moment of silence passed as we walked across a bridge. "Where should we go now?" Hyunjin asked.
I looked around — there weren't very many places we could sit down. The bridge we were on was a spacious one, enough for a small car to pass through, despite the lack of an actually paved road. It was a stone bridge—steady and stable. The sun was setting and the side borders of the bridge itself were pretty wide – enough for one to sit and watch the sunset.
"We could just stay on this bridge," I said.
He looked at me with a conflicted expression. "Staying here?" He also looked around, observing the same things I did. "I guess there is space for us here." We walked to one side of the bridge and hopped up onto one side, setting our things down next to each other. I took out my sketchbook and would glance at it, then to the sunset, then at Hyunjin, then at my paper again. I did this a couple more times. Hyunjin took out his own sketchbook and started sketching something down next to me.
"So... how come you were in my Intro to Business class?" I asked him as I sketched the sunset. He hummed and kept drawing.
"Just wanted to see what business majors were like. My friends say not to talk to them," Hyunjin looked at me, "But you seem like a good one, so I can say my experience was nice." He smiled at me like he didn't just admit that his friends low-key insulted my entire major. Hyunjin was the kind of handsome person that people would stop in their tracks just to admire on their way to work, the kind where people would compliment freely in the streets. Maybe I took a certain interest in him as well and just took a step further; maybe that was why I didn't think I minded as much as I should've in that moment.
So I laughed a bit at it. "Ah... I don't think I knew that people talked badly of my major, huh..." I said with a small smile, sketching a couple lines on Hyunjin's paper face. The thought of we're supposed to be studying with this boy, not flirting with him! passed my mind briefly, but I ignored it for now, wanting to be stuck in this peaceful bliss for a while longer. "What's yours? You obviously know I'm a business major," I chuckled.
"I'm majoring in art. I think I made it a bit obvious earlier with my hand comment," he smiled sheepishly and kept moving his pencil across his paper. "Minoring in dance. I love that class to death..." He paused. "...but sometimes it gets a little boring in my dance class, like it was today, so I wanted to skip and see what the fuss was about in business."
"'See what the fuss was about,' huh?" I laughed. "Well, now you know. We're probably just as boring as your class was today."
He shook his head. "No, actually... I think I liked the class. Maybe it was because I had a certain somebody," Hyunjin nudged my arm with a small smile dancing on his lips. "that I could relate and talk with. If I didn't, it would be absolutely super boring."
I felt my cheeks heat up and my lips curled into another damn smile. I was so smiley today. Probably because I was talking to a man that was a million, bajillion times out of my league comfortably like we had been friends for a long time, although realistically we had only known and befriended each other in the last three to four hours or so. "I'm happy you think I'm relatable." I smiled at him as we kept drawing side-by-side.
"I'm happy I skipped dance today, I wouldn't have met you otherwise." He said. "You're cool."
I blushed. "You're cool too."
