One final push.
There she was,
Their little bundle of joy.
Oh how they've longed for this moment.
The mother, although weakened, gently cradled the newborn to her chest. Her rapid heartbeat calming down as it matched the baby's.
Her beautiful baby girl.
As quick as she lay with her child on her chest, the nurses swept the newborn up to be cleaned.
A father was left to pace outside of the labor room. Nerves sent the man into a restless frenzy as he had no choice but to wait.
Had he actually become a father now?
What of his wife, is she alright?
What's taking so long?
Why couldn't he be present in there?
Rationality became a blur as he watched from the small window the labor room door had graciously provided, the nurses swiftly make their way to an adjacent room holding something barely the size of his forearm.
That..
That must be.
Thoughts were left unfinished as a sudden rush overwhelmed his already overworked mind, forcing his body to temporarily shut down.
Thank goodness a staff member was left to stay by his side. It's not an uncommon occurrence, after all.
The nurse was quick to act, placing the unconscious male's body into the recovering position as a smelling salt was hovered right by his nose, the other hand busy fanning him with a magazine. His body jerked from the sensation.
God, what was that?
Gradually, he gathered his bearings and thanked the nurse for all they've done for the couple. A door opening snapped the grateful man out of his thanksgiving.
"Perfect timing! If you're ready, Mrs. Ayatsuru is waiting for you," the senior nurse said to the anxious father, eyes crinkling in empathic happiness as he held the door open.
Unable to give a proper response at the moment, the man could only show his gratitude in an eager nod as he shakily speed-walked towards the occupied bed.
His wife looked a mess, but not to him. Not when she just birthed beauty personified.
His darling baby girl.
A perfect combination of the parents.
Thin tufts of ebony from her head that matched her mother's, yet her eyes were surrounded by white; her father.
And her eyes,
Oh, her eyes held the sky at its prettiest.
Her eyes?
She opened her eyes!
Widened, shocked eyes stared back at curiously squinted ones. Mixed hues of lavenders to pinks to deep blues. The father slightly squinted as he spotted faint golden specks.
Sunset,
What a coincidence.
As the man glanced out the window, before returning to the squirming bundle in his arms. His hands gently held the baby, his eyes easily bested his hands.
Subconsciously, salty tears ran down his cheeks. Not wanting any to land on his child, he handed her back to her mother as he frantically wiped his eyes and attempted to gather his composure. Can't ruin his first impression, certainly not when he's dolled up in his best collared shirt!
With his eyes failing to stop crying, he leaned into the new mother, placing happy little kisses along her forehead with words of praise accompanying every peck.
The woman welcomed every show of affection her husband so willingly gave as she hugged her - their - baby close. After all those years of trying, they finally did it.
Peace engulfed her entire being in a warm embrace as fatigue settled in. Noticing her droopy and dazed eyes, the father called over the nurses who patiently waited by the door, worried for his beloved. They reassured him, taking the cleaned and swaddled baby once more off the mother's chest and into the prepared bassinet.
He let the mother-daughter pair rest as he silently made his way out the now dimly lit room. Caffeine should be able to keep his system running and he knows of the vending machine at the end of the hallway thanks to his earlier pacing.
His shoes occasionally squeaked against the clean floor of the hospital. As he waited for the machine to finish dispensing the canned beverage, a doctor approached him with a clipboard in hand.
