I found my mom near the end of the store. She gave me a smile and tilted her head a little, "Already going on adventures, huh?"
"She was in need of help, and she seemed to be on the edge of breaking down. She lost her little sister."
My Mom grabbed my shoulders, "I am so proud of you, Oscar. It just pains me to see you're growing up so quickly."
I chuckled and gave my mom a quick hug. I am definitely a Mommy's boy, and not ashamed of it. She has been my number one supporter throughout my career and, most importantly, my shoulder to lean on in big, life-changing moments.
Just like this one.
After being Formula 3 champion in my rookie year, Formula 2 champion in, yet again, my rookie year, and reserve driver for the Alpine F1 team last year, I finally made it into an official seat within the highest class of international racing: Formula One.
McLaren F1 Team.
It had been a roller coaster of events, with Alpine releasing a false statement and then threatening a lawsuit... I had better ways of starting a season.
"Anyways, can I expect you to come over to Australia in the summer break, or are your eyes already set on rescuing more ladies in distress?"
I rolled my eyes at her teasing, "Mom, it's not like that. I was just helping out."
She chuckled, "Well, keep being the good guy. It suits you."
"I will," I reassured her promisingly. "You can expect me to come to Australia in between the breaks."
"That lightens my heart. Do you have everything you need?" My Mom asked, shaking me from my thoughts, and I immediately nodded.
"Yeah, I just needed the little stuff here," I looked into our cart; it contains the box with dishware, a few different pots and pans, and silverware. "And they will deliver the boxspring bed around noon."
After a few years of living in a rented apartment, I recently bought my first one. Zac Brown, CEO of McLaren, made sure it was a great place in downtown London.
We made our way to the checkout, and my mom insisted on paying for the items. I tried to protest, but she waved me off, saying, "Consider it a little support for your new chapter."
I rolled my eyes playfully; it is not like my parents have not supported me throughout my entire career already. So, I let her play; the smile on her face was priceless, and I wouldn't have gotten it otherwise.
We walked to the McLaren parked in the parking lot of the store; it is an early gift from Zak since the season hasn't even formally started yet, but he wants me to have easy access to traveling around the city.
"Behave," My Mom warned me again as she slipped into the passenger seat of the car. She fastened her seatbelt. It's something she always does when I am the designated driver, yet she knows and trusts me to drive around safely.
Within twenty minutes, we arrive at my apartment. I carried the essentials upstairs and immediately started unpacking the bought goods. Yet again, my Mom insisted on helping and arranging the kitchen as well as making a quick shopping list, claiming that she has to make sure her son eats properly when she goes back to Australia.
"Oscar, you really need more vegetables in your diet. I'll add that to the list," my mom remarked, scribbling down on a piece of paper.
"I know, I know," I retorted with a chuckle. "I promise to eat more than just takeout and instant noodles."
She gave me a playful glare, knowing that I was joking, and continued along, "You better, young man. I won't have my son living on junk food."
"I think my trainer would definitely agree with you."
She laughed, "I am happy about that," she grabbed the shopping list from the counter and waved it in the air. "I'm going to do some shopping for you. Why don't you start with unpacking some of the boxes already?"
I nodded and grabbed one of the boxes with a black marker Kitchen is written on it. As I started unpacking, my mind began to wander. It's only November; it would take another three months before the racing season of 2023 would start, but the weight of expectations sits squarely on my shoulders.
Joining McLaren was a dream come true, but with it came a whole new level of pressure. I just have to keep reminding myself that I've earned my place there and that McLaren signed me for a reason.
The doorbell interrupted my contemplation, and I found the delivery guy with my new boxspring bed down the hall. I immediately pressed the button to let him in.
"Oscar Piastri?" He asked for confirmation when he stood in front of my door. I nodded, and he scrabbled something on the paper in his hand. "I've got some extra stuff with me, a present from Zac Brown and Andrea Stella."
"Oh," I let out surprised. "Thank you, I guess."
"No worries. I will set everything up immediately and will probably be gone around eight PM."
"What did they order for me?" I asked as I looked at the time; if he leaves around eight, that would mean he's here for a full four hours.
"Let me check," He went through his documents. "I have a bed, a kitchen table, and a salon table."
So, they gifted me two tables.
"Sounds perfect," I reassured him with a smile. "Can I offer you something to drink? A coffee, maybe?"
"That would be nice."
The gifts couldn't have arrived at a better time as my Mom and I had scheduled to go shopping for other furniture tomorrow. I poured some coffee in for the man and quickly checked my email for news about other deliveries.
"Oh, Oscar," My Mom excitedly enters the kitchen, her smile wide. Her arrival stopped me from looking through my mail. "I think I just saw that girl from the IKEA enter the building, too. Maybe she lives here."
I playfully rolled my eyes, not admitting that the piece of information surely pulled my attention. My mom smirked as she noticed my reaction, and nudged me.
"It's unfortunate that your relationship with Lily ended, and I completely understand that you want to focus on your first year in Formula One, but that doesn't mean you cannot ask a girl out for a night."
"We will see," I retorted. "I'm sure that if she lives here, I will see her more often."
