Chapter 17: Final date.

Start from the beginning

As soon as school was over, all I wanted to do was call her. I dropped my bag in my room and rushed to the house phone, clutching the letter she had sent back in its envelope. "Hello?" a woman's voice greeted me through the phone. "Oh, um, hi, is this Y/n?" I nervously inquired. "Oh no, this is her mother, but I can get her on the phone," the woman replied in a sweet yet raspy voice.

"Oh yes, Miss L/n, thank you," she nodded. "Hey, wait, are you that Finney boy?" The woman inquired, curiosity piqued. "Uh, y-yes, my name is Finney, why?" I stammered in response. The woman's eyes widened with surprise. "Oh, Y/n's told me so much about you. She's always talking abou—" her words were abruptly interrupted. "Mum!" A brief moment of silence followed. "Sorry about that—anyways, what's up?" Hearing Y/n's voice instantly brought comfort and relief.

"Jeez, it's so good to hear you speak—" I blurted out spontaneously, my face flushing with embarrassment but trying to maintain a cool façade. "Oh, thanks, you too—so how are things?" Y/n's voice sounded through the phone. "Normal, I guess..." I leaned against the wall, attempting to sound casual. "Define 'normal'?" we both shared a giggle. "Well, I guess it's all the same again. People are much more overprotective and stuff, but no one really cares too much anymore." As I spoke, I heard rustling nearby, causing my attention to shift abruptly.

"Hah—opposite for me," Y/n replied, a playful grin lighting up her face. "My mum is super fun, like Jimmy but more present." I nodded, trying to steady my nerves. This was my chance; I could do this, I reassured myself. "Speaking of fun, there's this carnival happening on Friday night. I know you're out of town but—do you maybe wanna go together?" I held my breath, anxiously awaiting her response. A small gasp escaped her lips. "A carnival? I've never been to one before, sure—sounds like a date." My heart soared, and my eyes lit up with excitement. "Great! It's within walking distance, so I'll pick you up at 6?"

"Do you know where I live?" I nodded confidently. "21 Ametyville's place," I recalled, reading the address from the envelope she had sent. "Great, I gotta go hang out with my mum now. See you then~" Y/n hung up, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of elation from the way she spoke. "Fuck yes!" I exclaimed, holding up a fist in victory before realizing Gwen was standing beside me. "Olalaaa, someone's got a date," she teased. Trying to downplay it, I walked away, insisting, "No, I don't. It's just a friend." Gwen rolled her eyes, grinning mischievously. "I'm not stupid," she giggled, hopping away, leaving me to roll my eyes playfully at her teasing.

Y/n POV:

After hanging up the phone with a mixture of excitement and embarrassment, you tried to suppress the small smile that crept onto your face. "See you then, what the fuck, that was so stupid," you muttered, facepalming yourself in a futile attempt to hide your reddened cheeks. It was hard to believe that in just two days, you were going on a date. Oh my god...

Just as you were lost in your thoughts, your mom walked into the room, catching you kicking your legs while lying on your stomach. She smiled at you, and you returned the gesture, feeling a little flustered. "I'm on break from work, so... do you wanna hang out today?" she asked, and you eagerly nodded, hopping out of bed to follow her. "So boys already, hey?" she teased, causing you to roll your eyes. "He's just a friend," you protested, but she playfully interrupted, leaving you feeling slightly embarrassed.

As you spent the rest of the week with her, doing fun activities and simply enjoying each other's company, you couldn't help but appreciate the bond you shared. Your mom had an effortlessly cool vibe, with her tied-up ponytail and shorts giving her a bit of an edgy and rough look, but her warm and friendly personality made her all the more approachable. She was the kind of person you could turn to for emotional support, and you knew you'd have a great time whenever you were together. The days passed quickly, and soon enough, it was Friday.
