How had I ended up here? Well that was one hell of a question, I thought as I pulled up next to the cream almost brown tinted car whose owner I was set out to meet this summer evening. I parked my car and turned the engine off. My eyes fluttered closed as I took a deep breath. It was now or never I guess.
It didn't take long before the butterflies started acting up in my stomach - as if they hadn't already on the whole ride there - I tried my best to calm my nerves. But upon seeing her it was close to impossible. That golden hair, the oh-so-very elegant shirt she was wearing paired with a skirt I'm sure would cost three times my monthly salary. I stopped for a moment, dead in my tracks, watching her. The grip this woman had on me was inexplicable. It'd gone on for a couple of months now and the attraction I felt for her had come suddenly as she'd visited the furniture store I'd been working in. The first time I met her, she'd made me speechless. I will never forget how she looked that day. Her hair was done up in a tidy bun, she'd been wearing a gray blazer with a matching skirt. When she'd walked up to the counter, not any counter but the counter I was stationed at, she smelled of sandalwood, roses and cigarette smoke. A scent I would've killed to feel again after that day. Carol had explained to me through text and numerous phone calls that the situation with her and her soon-to-be ex-husband Hargess was very complicated. I'd told Carol I would do anything and everything it took for her to feel happy again, she'd only laughed at me and called me "dearest". A nickname I'd held dear to my heart ever since it first left her lips.
Love. A strange yet at times so beautiful phenomenon. The word love was not enough to describe what I felt for her. It was more than love, it was everything. I needed her in the same way the light needs darkness, the same way flowers need the sun and the rain, and the same way you needed air to breathe. She was my everything, yet I barely knew anything about her. Hopefully, that was about to change tonight.
As I breathed in, the scent of flowers - that had been warmed up by the sun the entirety of the day - and the luke warm summer night air filled my lungs. Carol was sitting on a blanket in the grass, a lake ahead of her. If only I could've frozen time I would've. I would've turned this sight into a painting and hung it above my bed. Before I had any more time to let my thoughts wander she was waving at me. I was brought back to reality. A reality that was just as beautiful as my wildest dreams. A smile slowly crept it's way onto my face. I waved back at her and started walking closer. When I was close enough she stood up - which she obviously hadn't needed to, I'm no royalty.
"Y/N." She smiled at me.
"Carol." I said hesitantly, trying to match her confidence. She wrapped her arms around me in an short hug, but I still managed to get a whiz of that same perfume I'd smelt the day I first met her. She released me and bluntly stared at me, from my head to my toes. My self-consciousness was yelling at me to run away in the opposite direction but I remained still. A smirk was displayed on her face when I was brave enough to once again meet those icy blue eyes.
"Have a seat." Just like an obedient puppy, I sat down on the blanket. Folding my flowery sundress around me to seem as put together as possible. It wasn't until now I noticed the wide selection of food and snacks displayed in the middle of the blanket. There were strawberries, pain-au-chocolates, brie cheese, a baguette, just so many things that were all screaming romantic picnic. I gasped.
"Oh, Carol... You didn't have to bring all this by yourself, you could've told me to..."
"Hush, now." She interrupted me, making me fall silent. Awe in my eyes. "It's my treat." She smiled at me and stared into my eyes forcing me to avert my gaze, she noticed and chuckled making my cheeks turn a shade darker red than what they'd previously been.
I lift my gaze upon hearing liquid being poured into a glass. Carol had opened a bottle of red wine and poured it into a wine glass. Without a word she handed it to me. "Thank you." She poured another glass for herself and I watched her, as if I'd been enchanted, as she did. The way you could see the full length of her eyelashes as she was looking down, the way her red-painted lips were slightly parted. I was so busy admiring her I never noticed she lift up her glass, signaling a toast.
