NOT STRONG ENOUGH — BOYGENIUS
I don't know why I am
The way I am

THE CHATEAU WAS messy. Not in the way that caused disgust, but in the way that exuded love and warmth.

The run down shack had always been a cluttered environment. There was mismatched furniture all throughout the house and broken belongings that should've been replaced years ago. The shoe rack by the door was perpetually overflowing despite the Routledges using the same pair of shoes everyday. There was a variety of throw blankets making a soft mountain at the end of the couch, just in front of the coffee table with one short leg. Random trinkets and discoloured papers littered every surface and every wall was covered in some sort of treasure-related media. It was messy, but it was home.

JJ and Stella had no problem waiting for John B to return. They sat in the backyard facing each other in the hammock while laughing about nothing and debating harmless opinions. They teased each other like the best friends they were until hours passed by and they nearly forgot about why they were there in the first place.

It was well into the late afternoon when Stella remembered that her mother was still at the hospital without a car. Thankfully, the surgeon hadn't finished her shift yet and the couple made it just in time.

JJ was in the drivers seat with Emma beside him and Stella in the back. The two teens played a round of Rock-Paper-Scissors to decide who would drive and when JJ saw that he lost, he sprinted to the car with Stella closely behind. He held the car keys above his head so Stella couldn't reach and when she gave up her valiant attempts, he grinned and opened the back door for her.

On their way home, they stopped by Heyward's so Emma could buy ingredients for dinner. It was Mrs. Heyward that spotted the car first. She and her husband were standing by the grill on the back deck with Cleo waiting for Pope to come home. A smile came over her face when she saw the doctor in the passenger seat. The two women had always been friendly as their kids grew up, but when the group of teenagers went missing, they leaned on each other for support. Their friendship—like Emma and Anna Carrera's—grew stronger. It wasn't a shock when the trio were invited to stay for dinner.

"You must be Cleo!" Emma exclaimed as she approached the Heywards. Her arms opened with every intention of pulling the girl into a hug. Her smile was bright and welcoming, and Cleo understood why her friends spoke so highly of the woman. "It's about time we properly met. Thank you for keeping those two out of trouble."

JJ furrowed his brows as Mrs. Heyward handed him paper plates. "Trouble? Us? Never."

Stella scoffed as Pope's dad greeted her by messing up her hair. "Yeah, we're a pair of angels."

"Angels that go missing and give their parents heart attacks," the older man huffed before heading into the store.

Emma made herself comfortable as the three teens set the picnic table and asked them questions in an attempt to know Cleo better. The couple let their friend answer most of them before realizing Pope's absence.
