The soft glow of the mirror lit the dimly lit bedroom, casting long shadows on the walls. A young man stood still, staring at his reflection. His fingers fidgeted with the folds of his costume. a fantasy-themed outfit meant to fit the reunion party's whimsical theme. Though he looked the part on the outside, inside... he felt completely out of place.

"Hm... I guess this is good enough for the reunion," he muttered to himself, voice low and unconvincing.

He sighed, long and heavy, as he looked into his own eyes. They seemed tired. Not just from lack of sleep-but from a weight he carried quietly.

'What's the point, anyway? They're all gonna ask about my life... my career... my girlfriend...'
He winced at the thought.
Or the lack of one.

It wasn't that he didn't want love.. he did. He just hadn't found it. Or maybe it hadn't found him. Either way, he knew tonight would be a minefield of teasing and forced smiles. He was used to being the quiet one. The "nice guy" who never quite stood out.

But the fantasy theme gave him a strange excuse to become someone else for a night. Even if just for a few hours.
He glanced at his phone. The group chat was exploding with messages-photos of costumes, inside jokes, excited rambling.

He forced a smile.

"...Time to play the part," he whispered.

After grabbing his wallet and keys, he stepped outside. The door clicked shut behind him as he locked it, pausing for a second.
"Alright... let's get this over with."

As he walked down the road, the wind gently rustled the trees above. Night had just fallen, and the moon hung low in the sky, casting silver light over the quiet neighborhood. The world felt... still.

He kept one hand in his pocket, the other holding his phone as he scrolled through the chat again. His friends were already at the venue, probably laughing and sharing drinks.

But then, something made him stop.

A soft, almost inaudible sound. Like sobbing. He turned his head-and there, just beyond the streetlight's reach, sat a girl on the curb. Alone. Her shoulders were shaking.

Her hair shimmered silver-white under the moonlight, cascading down her back like a river of snow. But it was her eyes that struck him when she briefly glanced up. Eyes the color of blood red rubies, filled with tears and something even deeper.

Pain.
Loneliness.
Despair.

Something about the way she looked hit him like a punch to the gut. That look-he'd seen it before. Not on others. On himself. In his own mirror. In the days when everything felt like it was falling apart.

He hesitated at first, but his heart tugged at him. So he approached, slowly, not wanting to startle her.

When he reached her side, he gently touched her shoulder.

"Hey..." he said softly, "are you alright?"

The girl flinched slightly, then turned to him. Their eyes met. His breath caught.

She looks so... broken.

"Did something happen?" he asked again, this time more gently.

She didn't answer right away. Her lips parted as if to speak, but no words came. Instead, tears continued to flow, tracing delicate paths down her cheeks.

He didn't expect her to open up immediately. So he sat down beside her, close-but not too close.

"You don't have to talk if you're not ready," he said quietly, looking up at the stars. "But if you want to... I'll listen."

She looked at him, surprised. As if she didn't expect kindness.

A few long seconds passed.

"...W-well," she finally whispered, voice shaking, "my friends... they betrayed me. All of them."

She bit her lip, trembling. "I thought they cared. I thought we were close... but they just used me. Lied to me. Threw me away."

His chest tightened. Her words felt too familiar.

"I'm sorry," he said softly. "That must've hurt like hell."

She nodded, wiping her eyes. Her voice broke again. "It's stupid, I know-"

"It's not stupid," he cut in gently, his tone sincere. "People always act like pain is something you should hide. Like it's a weakness. But it's not. Feeling hurt means you cared. That's not something to be ashamed of."

She blinked, stunned. No one had ever said that to her before.

He turned toward her with a warm, reassuring smile.

"...If you'd like, I can be your friend," he added. "A real one."

Her eyes widened. She blushed, caught off guard by the offer-and the warmth behind it.

"R-really?" she asked, her voice small.

"Yeah," he said with a soft chuckle. "We all need someone. Even if it's just one person."

He extended his hand.

"I'm Taka Kimizawa. And you?"

She hesitated, then took his hand. Her fingers were cold.

"M-My name is Ze..." she paused. "No. My name is Mizaki. Mizaki Kimino."

He smiled. "That's a beautiful name."

Her cheeks flushed again. She wasn't used to compliments. Especially ones that sounded so genuine.

Taka tilted his head, a bit curious. "So... where are you from? I haven't seen you around here before."

Mizaki bit her lip, then glanced away.

"...I'm not from this world," she said softly.

Before he could react, she lifted her hand. A radiant golden portal bloomed into existence beside them, swirling like liquid light.

Taka blinked, speechless for a moment.

"...Whoa," he finally breathed. "Okay... that's insanely cool."

Mizaki giggled. It was quiet and sweet-and something in her heart felt a little warmer than before.

Then Taka stood up and dusted off his outfit.
"Well, I was on my way to a party," he said, smiling again. "It's kinda silly, but it's got a fantasy theme. You'd fit right in."

She looked up at him, eyes wide.

"You... want me to come with you?"

"Sure," he said, holding out his hand again. "Unless you've got more important magic to do."

She hesitated for only a second, then slipped her hand into his.

"...I'd like that."

As she stood, their fingers briefly lingered in each other's grasp before they slowly began to walk together-side by side, beneath the stars.

The party lights glowed in the distance.

And for the first time in a long time... both of them felt like maybe, just maybe, they weren't alone anymore.
