"Yeah, and the screen is so BIG!" Scout exclaims. "It's as big as my arm! You know, the TVs we got back home, they're big and boxy, yeah, they're not flat like that!" He says, holding out his arm as he speaks of your television. "And I ain't never seen a clearer picture than that on a TV screen before! Oh man, my ma would love one of those!" He stops as he mentions his mother, trailing off.
"And that device you had last night," you heard Spy chime in, "it's unlike anything I've ever seen."
You nod at that. "I'd figure. You guys came from the 1970s, right?" You ask. A few of them respond. "The year is 2023 right now, so that would explain it a bit, right?"
"So are you saying we time traveled?" Engineer asked, a hint of excitement in his voice.
You shook your head. "I know you didn't time travel, because history would have definitely remembered you. It has to be an alternate universe or a different world or something."
You cringe at your own words. "Guys I know how messed up it sounds, and I hate to tell you this, but I think the only way you're going back home is if Mr Engineer is able to make something to bring you back. Or if Merasmus can somehow track you down."
The group takes a moment to digest your words. If you were right, they were well and truly stuck here. If not then they could just kill you for wasting their time.
But Demo thinks you're right. He's had experience with Merasmus, if you have any levity to your claims it's Demo believing you. And the others seem to know that...
Your heart was hammering in your chest, your hands have been shaking the entire time. God you needed to get out of there.
You can see them trying to work out how to deal with this information. You realize with concern that Scout is starting to panic, starting to breath in heavily, his arms hugging and holding his sides.
"But... But whatdya mean, we can't be stuck here! My Ma! I..." His voice cracks. "Guys, my Ma's birthday is coming up! I never miss my Ma's birthday, we can't be stuck here! We gotta get back home NOW!"
You look on sadly. You don't think there's anything you could do. You go to the kitchen and pull out a water bottle from the fridge, handing it to him. He didn't look like he was having a panic attack, but even if he was you were sure you wouldn't be able to help. Despite you being very prone to them, you're not really that good at dealing with them yourself.
You give everybody an uneasy look.
"I... I'm sure you're not stuck here permanently! You can't be, that would just be messed up." You look around the room for your keys and phone. "Look everybody, I'm sorry to dip like this, but I have to go get groceries. I'm sure you noticed how... sparse the fridge is. I just need to get enough to feed you guys for a week, buy some pajamas for you too."
You turned on your laptop and hooked it up to your television, putting on the playlist you assembled. It was full of you and your friends playthroughs on tf2. They were very straightforward playthroughs, you were fairly certain you didn't say anything too out of pocket in them.
You give everyone a look as you do this.
"Ok, what's about to play on the TV is little... kind of like home movies? Anyways, they're going to show me and a few of my friends playing the game." You start to apologize in advance. "Look, if I make any jokes about y'all in these videos, it's about the pre established characters in the games, and not actually you, okay? I'm sure you will get that but I just feel the need to state it. The little obligatory disclaimer."
They look incredulously at the television, then at you. You shrugged. You just had to get out of there for now.
You sigh as you pocket your phone and your keys. "Guys, I have a lot of shopping to do..." You give a quick "Oh" as you walk towards the window, pointing out of it. "Look out here, see that dollar store?"
