So the main character kya is also known as the marsh girl. And so in the first like chapter of the book kyas mom left. Nobody knew why at the time.Kay did end up finding out her mom was mentally ill. So it was kya, her dad, and her brother. So a while after the mom left Jodie (the brother) left then the dad (but he was in and out of the picture till he was out of it completely) So it was just 6 year old kya. And she found stuff to sell (food) for money since the dad was pretty much out of the picture. (And all this is taking place in the 1950's 1960's) so she does it for a few years and this guy named tate sees her and they hang out, talk, whatever. He leaves for college and whatnot so he's not there for a few years. So here comes this guy named chase andrews And so he ends up 'dating' her and they hang out. When tate finds out he tries to warn kya but she doesn't listen and yells at him to go away (and yet tate helps her read and write plus helps her write all these books) and so she regrets it because then chase gets married. And like in the mix of this at some point chase gets killed or something and they are trying to figure it out. But kya  They all think it is kya and so she's sitting in jail. She was found innocent. But some of the reason thought it was kya was because she was about to get raped and s3xualally assaulted. But she managed to get away.
