Digging, Digging, and More Digging

You and your friend, Kate were competing to see who could dig deeper or find something the quickest. Soon enough Kate finds a brown book, seems like a diary. She calls to you and you come over, inspecting the book wiping dust of of it while you go. You both sit down on a rock and open the book.

"August 26, 1929

Dear diary, Mama couldnt find us any food today so we just ate some left over chicken! The chickens were especially loud today . Its like they were scared of something.. Oh! And my sister Dorothy took me outside to look at the clouds, I did see Mama in the dining room on a chair with her head in her hands, she must have been playing peekaboo by herself! Why was she playing peekabo by herself, and why did her hands look wet when she came out to check on us? I dont really know why they did.. but i have to go eat a heavy dinner of bread and sugar! Yummy!"

"August 27, 1929

Dear Diary, things have gotten a lot worse. We ran out of food just this morning and the nearest store is over 3 miles away! Its not like we can afford their extremely overpriced bread and sugar. Mama said we'll go stay with Gramps for a little bit, we are leaving tomorrow. Gramps is boring, all he does is tell us stories about how he used to travel in wagons cause his Mama didnt have enough for one of them gas devices. One of my friends James found a book earlier, it had a bunch of words and was boring like Gramps's stories. Oh! And Dorothy found a gold chain and a ribbon for her hair when we went in the forest, I wonder who would drop such precious things, maybe it was one of them richies who shove all of their money in our face. One day I'm gonna stand up to those nasty boys. Anyways I have to pack for Gramps house. I'll see you tomorrow Diary!"

You look at Kate and say "Uhh.. are we gonna keep reading?" Kate nods as she stares down the book like shes having a staring contest with it.

"August 28, 1929

Dear Diary, Today we went to Gramps house, he doesnt live close so we had to walk 2 miles! My feet hurt so much after that walk. When we arrived Gramps served us some tomato soup, it did not taste good. Gramps on the other hand loves tomato soup, I did see he had some corn flakes though! At the store theyre 75 cents, thats really overpriced, especially in this economy. Economy is the new word Mama taught me today, it means how much money a country has.. or something like that, Anyways Gramps is taking us for a walk so i have to go. See you later Diary!"
