We all sat around a fire at Rixon's while JJ got back from changing into his previous clothes.

"Hey guys, so, like, my dad's already gonna kill me. So, what's this mandatory meeting about," Pope asked, looking at John B. JJ and I sat close together on a log as Kie watched us all.

"You ready for this," John B asked. He paused before continuing, "so the gold never went down with the Royal Merchant."

"Oh, here we go again with this," Pope said, widening his eyes with a quick roll.

"No, hear him out, alright," JJ looked at him, lifting his hands slightly, in a calm-down sort of way. The three of us eagerly looked at the group waiting for the news to be broken just to see their reactions.

"It's been here the whole time. It's on the island," John B continued, looking at Kiara.

"I'd like to voice my skepticism," Pope looked straight into the fire holding up a finger in the air. God, he sounded like that kid from The Magic School Bus.

"I'm sure you would, Pope. Can I please present you with my evidence, sir," John B stood up walking over to his backpack. "Alright, so, in my backpack, I have a letter from Denmark Tanny." Kiara looked at the folded-up letter asking who the hell that was. I took my heels off, moving my legs over JJ's lap, who rested his arms on them.

"Denmark Tanny was a slave that survived the Royal Merchant wreck. Slaves weren't mentioned as crew members on the ship, but my dad found the complete manifest. That was his big discovery. So, Tanny used the gold from the Merchant to buy his freedom. After that, he bought his farm. Drumroll, because that farm is...Tannyhill Plantation." We passed around the letter to one another as our facial expressions lifted slowly.

"So after that, he used his money to free even more slaves, and then he sold a shit ton of rice, which pissed off all the white planters, and then they decided to lynch him. So on the day they were coming to get him, he writes a letter to his son as a farewell. In the last line of that letter, he leaves a coded message about where to find the gold."

Kiara made a face and impatiently asked, "where?"

"Harvest the wheat, in parcel nine, near the water." Pope shined his light at all of us as John B spoke. He explained that wheat was code for gold, and all we needed was an original survey map.

"So this might have a small chance of being true," Pope explained. I stood up, running my fingers through my hair in disbelief as JJ walked over to pick John B up.

"I'm so proud of you right now." He walked back over, looking at me happily as Pope asked what the plan was.

"Good question, Sarah Cameron's coming over here tonight. She'll bring an original survey map-," John B began as Kiara cut him off.

"Wait! Wait! Sarah, w-why Sarah?"

I looked at JJ, "uh oh."

He looked at the ground, saying, "this is gonna be good."

"Sarah, uh, she got me into the archives at Chapel Hill yesterday, and that's where I got the letter." Kiara tilted her head, questioning him about being in Chapel Hill with her.

"He was mackin' on her," JJ said quickly.

"I wasn't mackin' on her, okay? I was using her for access."
"There was access, alright," JJ said, looking at me, winking, and letting out a soft chuckle.

"Shut up, JJ! Okay, this is benefiting all of us, unlike you two," John B said, pointing at us, irritated.

"Woah! Hey! Uhm, bringing our friendship into this is a new low," I declared,  looking him in the eyes. I could trust Kiara, and I already swore Pope to secrecy after JJ had revealed we were dating when he got arrested. John B and Kie continued to argue about letting her in on our group secret.
