III. One day, while desperately escaping runners, they lost each other. Devon had no sight of her mother and it seemed like she disappeared within seconds. One blink of an eye and she was alone. Stranded in a wasteland. Devon was convinced that her days were limited now that she was surviving on her own. After the first week of living alone, she would be lying if she said that she didn't cry from not being found. However, she did get found. Not by her mother but by a group of fireflies. The majority of them looked her age but one was the oldest. At first, she was unsure to go with them but her hunger was driving her body. So, she went along.
V. It had been a few months since the two last saw each other. Madeline was going to lose her mind if she didn't know where her daughter was. She was told to move on and accept the possible loss of her only child. However, she refused. There was no way that a child as intelligent as Devon would die so quickly by herself. She was resourceful and a quick runner. Surely, she was still alive. Right? Madeline never let the thought creep into her mind.
VI. When Joel and Tess are assigned to take the walking possibility of a cure to the fireflies, Madeline has to sneak her way into it. If there was ever a chance to find her child she was taking it. After all, nothing comes between a mother from finding her child.
