She had been laying awake for most of the night. He'd put his arm on her during his sleep some time ago and the weight of it gave her comfort. He stirred and she gently pushed his arm off of her so she could get up. Her movement stirred the dog laying in the small bed in the corner. She finished in the bathroom, then sat down next to the dog who wagged her tail in excitement. The woman sat there, petting the dog and thinking about the news she had received earlier that day. She flashed beck to when the doctor had said "It's almost impossible. It would be a miracle. It would be very dangerous. You can't have children."
A tear slid down her cheek. She cried silently while petting the dog in front of her. Her dream was over. Her heart ached more than it had ever ached before. She let out a little sob but quickly covered her mouth, no reason Joel should loose sleep over this too.
"Clarè." His voice was soft and sweet and right there behind her. She turned and saw he had gotten on the floor too. She put her head on his shoulder and let out a sob as his arms wrapped around her.
"Shhhh, It's ok, I'm here. We're in this together, remember?"
She nodded as she no longer tried to silence her cries. The back of her neck was wet and cold from the tears that dripped down her husband's face. He held her, he cried with her, he kissed her head, her ear, her neck.
When the crying had mostly stopped he held her chin and lifted it for her to look at him, "Hey. We are one. Your pain is my pain. When we said our vows at the alter we swore before friends, family, the law, and most importantly before God that we would be there for each other no matter what. We joined together that day, so this pain and loss you're feeling? It's not yours, it's ours. It's not you who can't bare a child, it's us who can't bare a child. But we will get through this. I promise you, we will get through this." He kissed her forehead and they hugged.
