At this point, my entire life feels like it's just a story. I can't remember when was the last time I talked to my best friend, I can't seem to figure out the exact time when I started going crazy and I just cannot figure out why or how I ended up seeing a dream about the future. It happened a few days ago, I remember being pushed onto the train tracks, I remember almost dying and I have no idea how but that moment morphed into going shopping with Hina and her younger brother 12 years later. It was like a vision or a dream but it felt too real, it was like I had time travelled. Although I think it's pretty crazy and irrational to think that I actually time travelled, I cannot find a rational explanation for what happened.
Everything I saw in what was supposedly 'the future' kinda scared me. Hina looked so happy and her smile still gave me the same feeling even 12 years later. The next moment I looked at her and her eyes didn't have the same happiness as before, instead, they looked lifeless and Hina was dead. I tried to save Naoto and I was so close but the moment I touched his hand, I was back in the past, no longer in that near-death experience on the train tracks.
I snap out of my thoughts
It's crazy how this class went from discussions of delinquent gangs to trains and then time travel in 20 minutes and I didn't even pay attention for one second.
It's also crazy how the teacher is now talking about our homework, which is to write a poem on 'friendship'
Cliche, I know
And I would have written on the topic, made up a story, and a friend who never existed. I am a writer, after all, making up stories is a part of it. But the teacher continues her explanation and my eyes widen when she explains that we have to write about 'old friendships' instead of just 'friendships'
I involuntarily glance over at Takemitchi who seems to be lost in thought, not really listening to the teacher. I immediately turn my gaze back to the notebook in front of me. I don't like writing about stuff that's actually happened, I prefer to write made-up stories. Most of the poems I write aren't written with a hidden meaning, or any meaning at all for that matter, people can see it in any way they want and make any meaning of it but I don't have any intended meanings behind what I write. And when I do have to write something with a meaning, I write it on something that never existed.
I don't really want to write about old friendships because the person that comes to mind when I hear that is sitting on the other side of the classroom right now, lost in thought and looking out the window.
To me, old friendships are hidden bruises that are unknown to the other person, it's looking at each other in the school hallway and wondering "where did we go wrong?" Blaming the other person while knowing that it's nobody's fault. But I wish it was.
A frown makes its way to my face, followed by unwanted thoughts and memories creeping into my brain. I remember how Takemitchi and I used to be best friends, I remember being friends with Hina too. She used to tell me about this boy she liked and how I knew him very well and I listened to her, lost in hope, wishing that the person she liked wasn't a boy but instead a girl, wishing that it was me. I was so lost in hope that I didn't even realise that the boy she liked was my best friend and before I knew it, I had lost them both.
I remember when Hina confessed to Takemitchi and he said that he liked her too. I remember slowly pushing away the only two friends I ever had.
But it was his fault, right?
I divert my attention back to the teacher to avoid thinking about it further. I realise that there's only 3 minutes left before the class is over and glance at the whiteboard, copying down the last bit of notes before the bell rings.
