chapter two: peppermint tea

"Why the fuck are you always stealing my fries?" Amelia whined as she caught Ross snatching the fried potato off her plate before stuffing them into his mouth with the most annoying smirk to ever exist. "I could've gotten you your own, you know."

Ross chuckled as he wiped his hands onto one of the napkins the waitress had given them. "You sipped away half of my Dr. Pepper, Mills. I think we're even."

After the get together with the group at the club to celebrate Ross' twenty-seventh birthday, Amelia had bribed the blond to get milkshakes and burgers at the local diner nearby. Since it was his birthday and Millie loved to show off her admiration towards Ross for not trying to get with any girl tonight, she was the one paying for his meal as well.

The brunette shrugged her shoulders before shaking her head, "That is not what this is about," She spoke up with raised eyebrows, noticing how Ross had now leaned back into the booth, arms resting on top of it as he watched her with a grin. "You're easy to bribe, love burgers and shakes and I despise seeing a woman's tongue down your throat, so it was an easy deal."

Her words caused a laugh to fall from his mouth as he watched her lean across the table to snatch the large cup with Dr. Pepper away once again. "For you saying you're not desperately in love with me, you tend to withhold me from everything that revolves around any other woman."

Amelia cocked her head to the side while holding eye contact, sighing softly. "Any other woman can snap her fingers and break your heart again, Ross. You know I hate to see you so miserable because you deserve so much more. So if I can keep you from having your heart broken again, I sure as hell will."

Her genuine words caused Ross to sit up straight on the leather clad seat. Of course he knew that Amelia cared more about him than she could ever care about herself and would do anything to provoke him from choosing the wrong path, but he had never heard the brunette speak up like this.

"I appreciate that so much," He spoke up with a small smile, reaching over to grasp her hand and tangle his slender fingers with hers before squeezing softly, "I appreciate you, Millie. I hope you know that."

Amelia brushed her thumb forward across his knuckles and backwards across the cold metal of the rings decorating his fingers, a smile slowly making its way onto her lips. "I know," She muttered, "Why is it that we're always this fucking sappy when we're sitting at a diner, still remotely shitfaced?"

Ross laughed, shrugging his shoulders as he said, "Wait for the walk back to my apartment, that will be even worse."

He was right. Totally right. Twenty minutes and a few blocks later, Ross and Amelia were finally nearing his apartment. Both of them let out a cheer when the large flat came into sight, a yelp escaping Amelia's lips when she noticed how poorly her high heels were treating her feet even after taking them off a few minutes ago.

"You okay, Mills?" Ross asked her once he noticed she had stopped walking and tugged her hand a bit more than he'd normally would whilst walking. "I told you to bring some spare shoes but your stubborn ass wouldn't listen to me. Nor will you ever."

Amelia rolled her eyes at Ross but never made a remark because she was fully aware of the fact that he was more than right. "We're almost home, asshat," She joked as they reached the glass front door and Ross fished his key card out of his pocket to unlock it before letting Amelia slip inside first.

It didn't take them long to reach the fourteenth floor and for Ross to unlock the front door, opening it fully so Amelia was able to wobble her way towards the couch and sit down to rest her feet a little as they caught up and talked about the blond's birthday.
