Honestly the best part of hunting a mysterious beast in the woods at night was that Eddie got to be alone with Steve. True they hadn't hung out as much since he'd been vamped, but Eddie missed "Harringtits" more than he let on. Being undead wasn't all it was cracked up to be either. As much fun as the super strength and enhanced agility were, the benefits weren't worth the bloodlust and new sunlight allergy. Luckily for the bloodsucking delinquent, a bunch of kids had reported being attacked by a large hairy creature in the woods at the edge of town. Not only that-- apparently there had been an increase in the number of deer carcasses that appear on the side of the road, all of which were torn to shreds and covered in claw marks. The kids had been sent to a camp up north for the summer, so that left him and Steve to take care of things.
"It's totally a werewolf." Eddie said, holding his hands up to his head like dog ears and getting ready to howl at the full moon above him, before getting interrupted by Steve who was walking behind him.
"There's no such thing as werewolves Munson. It's probably just a bear or REGULAR wolf, I don't get why you wanted us to come out here so bad in the first place!" Steve wasn't happy. It was true that Eddie practically begged the man to go exploring with him. He missed his friend. Ever since he was turned, it was like Steve was avoiding him. He was a bloodsucking monster now so understood how that would be off-putting, but Steve left for five months and came back without saying so much as a word to Eddie. He had to find out from Robin, he just wanted things to be back to how they were before. Preferably with less monsters-- but apparently that was too much to ask.
"Tsk!" Eddie sucked his teeth. "If you don't believe it's a monster then why'd you come with me?"
Steve paused for a brief moment before answering, which worried Eddie who turned to look at him. "I just wanted to make sure you didn't get mauled by something. Now keep your eyes in front of you, so you don't trip over anything!"
Eddie scoffed at Steve's concern and returned his attention to the woods in front of him. He was also confused by something else, Eddie could've sworn Steve's hair was longer than before. They hadn't hung out in awhile but he could've sworn Steve's hair was short this morning, "Oh so-- now you care about me? Where was all that for the five months you left!? First-- if anything attacks me I'll just drain them, Second-- you're the one with the flashlight so you should be in front, Harringtits!"
Eddie tried to hold back but he was actually really hurt. Eddie literally died that night and Steve just left, without a word.
Steve grabbed Eddie's wrist and pulled him back, "Don't. Say. That.", He growled. Eddie turned back to see a deathly serious look in Steve's eyes, and he couldn't tell if it was the moonlight or the flashlight but they were glowing. Steve stood there for a moment gripping Eddie's wrist tightly, before realizing what he was doing and letting go.
"I'm sorry I....", Steve couldn't speak. He kept opening his mouth but nothing came out.
Eddie took a breathe and apologized, "Hahh, I'm sorry... That Harringtits line was a little too far, you came out here to help me and--"
"No. I meant the thing about you-- draining people.", Steve cut him off.
"So, that's what it is?", Eddie replied. His voice full of pain. Steve looked confused.
"What are you talking about Munson?", Steve asked.
"I'm talking about you not being able to deal with the fact that I'm a Bloodsucking Monster! Right!?", Eddie didn't mean to yell but in his defense... He was pissed. Steve couldn't even look at him. His face was full of shame. That was all Eddie needed to see. His friend (his crush), couldn't even stand the sight of him.
"Maybe... maybe you were right this was... a bad idea. Let's just head back.", As Eddie walked away Steve grabbed his arm again.
"Wait, Don't go! I... That's not what I meant!" Steve's voice sounded like it was breaking.
"Please... Don't call yourself a monster. I could never think of you like that, but you're right-- I did leave because of you..."
Eddie's heart felt like it was shattering into a million pieces but Steve wasn't finished.
"... But not because I couldn't deal with you but... Because I wanted to save you."
Steve let go of Eddie, reached into his own jean pocket and pulled out... A rock. Eddie was beyond confused. How was a rock going to save him? Sure it wasn't your garden variety stone. It's was flat, about two inches wide and a translucent blue color. It sparkled under the full moonlight, it was pretty but Eddie didn't see what was so special about it.
"My trip, why I left for five months--- I was looking for this! It's called The Moonstone, it's said to have the power to break curses. I had to work for this crazy russian woman in Moscow to get it but.... It can help you. I'm sorry my leaving hurt you, and I should've said something sooner. I just couldn't face you after..."
"After what?", Eddie asked his heart somewhat mending.
"YOU. DIED. Everytime I saw you, I just... YOU. DIED.", Steve's voice was so full of sadness.
Eddie was too stunned to speak. His brain was trying to process everything, the boy in front of him had said. There was a...cure? Eddie was... Ecstatic! He could finally go out during the day again, and he wouldn't have to break into the hospital for blood bags, and most importantly-- Steve didn't hate him! It was like Eddie's birthday, Christmas and first orgasm all rolled into one. Which is why he didn't understand why Steve looked so worried.
"Hey, Harrington-- what's wrong? You totally just did the, knight in shining armor thing! You should be happy...why aren't you happy?", Steve's expression switched from worry to panic.
"I........", Steve froze. "Something else happened in Moscow." His voice was serious again.
"Wh-what happened?" Eddie could hear Steve's heart beating faster. The sound of his blood pumping through his veins was deafening. Eddie was fighting the urge to sink his fangs into his friends neck.
"There was... someone else who wanted the stone... they were cursed too.", Steve kept pausing.
"Ok? Apparently lots of people get cursed! They can use it after we're done with it. No big deal!"
Steve shook his head. "No. They can't. They....", He trailed off again and looked off into the distance as if he were remembering something horrible.
"They died.... I-- I killed them."
Eddie brain froze again. He must not of heard him right. Steve wouldn't kill an innocent person. Right? Steve saw the look Eddie was giving him and his eyes began to tear up as he continued.
"I didn't mean to! Th-they attacked me and I-I defended myself! I tried to help them but I was too late..." Steve tripped over his words but Eddie understood. At least he was defending himself, that made sense. But Steve wasn't done.
"But... During the fight they... they must've bit me. I didn't know what curse they had until-- I got back." Eddie's eyes widened as he realized what Steve was trying to say.
"I really didn't want you to come out here tonight, I thought I could convince you to turn around before it was too late but--"
Steve froze again and turned his head upwards as he stared at the Full Moon.
"It's too late!".....
