"Holly! Wake up dear!" My mom yelled from the kitchen.
I rolled over in my bed and groaned.
"Holly!" My mom yelled again, this time walking towards my room.
My door swung open followed by my lights being flicked on and my blanket taken from me, "We have a lot to get done today, wake up or I'm not helping you." she said before swiftly leaving my bedroom and not closing the door.
I slowly got up and put on a sweater before walking into my kitchen. Boxes were set up everywhere, you'd think the whole house was moving.
"Mom, why did you get so many boxes?" I asked as I sat at the table.
"You can never over pack!" She sang as she danced across the kitchen and started a pot of coffee, "So, I made a checklist of everything you need so you don't forget anything! I also added extras of everything just in case your roomie needs something" She smiled as she handed me a piece of lined paper with an itemized list of all my belongings scribbled on it.
I skimmed over the paper, blankets, pillows, clothes, toiletries, room decor, the list was pretty basic, except for the last few.
"Fire extinguisher, Fire blanket, Pepper spray, can opener. Mom what is all of this?" I asked as she poured two cups of coffee.
"You never know what could happen honey, better to be over prepared than unprepared." She slid a mug towards me, "So," she clapped her hands together "Where should we start?"
"Uh, my room I guess." I answered as I drank my coffee.
I followed my mom as she grabbed some boxes and headed to my room, the beginning to a very long, and quite sad, process of going through all of my belongings and deciding what i needed to bring with me and what i wouldn't, and no matter how many childhood stuffed animals and snowglobes i wanted to bring i had to leave them all.
I piled the last box into my car and shut the trunk. With how much extra things my mom was making me bring I'm surprised it all fit. Even though it was annoying, I appreciated how much my mom cared for me. I got into the front seat and started the car to let it warm before walking back into my house. My little brother and mom were both standing in the living room holding a sign saying Happy Moving out day!
I smiled warmly, my mom began tearing up before tackling me in a hug.
"I'm....gonna miss you...so much." She cried in between muffled sobs.
"I'm gonna miss you too" i sighed as i hugged her back
I looked up and saw my little brother tearing up too.
"Dont worry dawg, i'll get expelled so fast you won't even realize i was gone." I said jokingly before bringing him into a hug.
"Shall we go then?" My mom asked as she walked out the door.
We all piled into the car and started the long and slow drive to San Diego from Arizona.
We soon arrived and my mom could not find a parking spot to save her life.
"Oh come on, are this many people really inside of those dorms right now." She said as she threw her arms up in defeat.
We drove in circles for what seemed like an eternity before finally finding a spot.
We all stepped out of the car and looked around for a minute.
"Honey, go get checked in and everything and I'll start unloading your stuff." My mom ordered as she opened the trunk.
I walked towards the building in front of me, the anxiety building up inside of me, the longest i've been away from home was 2 weeks when i was 12 for summer camp, now i was gonna be living by myself for at least 4 years and i didnt even know who i was sharing a room with, it could be a serial killer for all i know!
I took a deep breath and stepped into the building and immediately started to panic, I have no idea what i'm doing, i don't know where to sign in or if i even have to sign in, i don't know where my room is, i don't know anyone here, i feel like a helpless little kid with everything spinning around me. My breath quickens as I frantically look for a bathroom or library or somewhere I could just hide.
All I can find is a dining area, a kitchen, and stairs leading to the corridors. I'm standing in the middle of this building looking like an idiot. My mind is racing and someone places their hand on my shoulder.
"Uh, are you okay?" A man's voice asks from behind me. I jump a bit forward and look back at the man, he's a little bit taller than me and has soft brown hair and a warm smile.
"Uhm, yeah, yeah i'm fine, i just..." My voice trails off and I feel tears swarming my eyes.
"Woah, Woah, ok let's find you somewhere to sit."The man says as he leads me to a chair at a circular table.
I take a seat and he sits across from me, we sit in silence while I try to collect myself. In this process I realize what's happening.
"Oh my god....i'm so sorry, shit, i'm so sorry this is so embarrassing, im sorry." my mind starts racing again.
"Hey, hey, hey it's okay, you're fine."He said calmly as he placed his hand on top of mine on the table.
"My name's Andrew." he states after I've caught my breath.
"Im holly." I respond with a shaky smile.
"Well Holly, you seem lost, do you need help with anything?" He questions softly.
"Uh, yeah. I actually have no idea what I'm doing." I responded weakly, it was embarrassing enough to admit it but it's especially embarrassing when I've only just met this guy.
"Well you're supposed to go get everything set up in another building but since you're already here and I assume you know what room you're in we can just go see if your roommate's in there and get everything else settled later." He responded as he stood up from the table.
I followed his lead and told him my room number.
"Well girls are on the left and guys are on the right, OH! Look at that, we're right across the hall from each other! " He exclaimed as we got to my room.
I knocked on the door, not expecting a response.
