Chapter 1

“Lianna, my grandchildren are coming to live with me!” Mrs Burke squeals, from where she is standing on her porch.

“Wow! That is amazing, how long are they going to be staying for?” I ask really happy for her and plus I like children, so I can’t wait to meet the little cuties.

“For over a year!” She shouts as she runs towards me and brings me into a tight hug.

“When are they coming?”

“Tomorrow!” She shouts again, pulling me tighter to her, if that is even possible.

I just laugh along with her as she continues to squeeze me really hard. She begins to jostle me about as she jumps up and down on the spot. I bang my chin against her chin, biting my tongue, causing me to groan in pain. Mrs Burke hears this and pulls away from me, wondering why I groaned.

“What’s wrong dear?” She asks as she cups my face.

“A pit ma thongue.” I tried to say: I bit my tongue, but it came out a bit weird as I kept a tight grasp n my tongue to get rid of the throbbing.

“Oh, I’m sorry dear. Come in and I will make you one of my special drinks that will heal it for you.” This might sound like she is talking to a baby, but no matter what injury I have sustained, after I have drunk her special drink I feel immediately better and I heal quicker.

I have tried to get her to tell me the recipe, but she is so stubborn and says that if I need it I can just as her to make it for me.

“No, no, it’s ok; I should probably start work now because I’ve got to go into town later anyway, so I need to get an early start.”

“Are you sure, because it will only take me five seconds to make it. If you want I could bring it out to you as you work.” She says not wanting me to be in any pain.

“I’m sure.” I laugh.

“Ok, well do you want me to bring you anything out?” She asks, still feeling guilty.

“Nah, I’m fine.” I say as I walk towards the back of the house to the barn outside.

Mrs Burke is the sweetest woman in the world. She gave me a job looking after her farm as she is too old to look after it by herself, and the pay is amazing. Plus it is no skin off my back because, when I was younger, everyday after school I would run across the road from my house and into her barn, checking on all of the cows, chickens, horses, pigs and the goats.

So I was thrilled when she asked me to work for her, and the hours are great. I work overtime but I don’t tell Mrs Burke because she would want to pay me and I already get paid too much already.

I headed to the barn, lost in my thoughts about what I should buy for Mrs Burke’s five grandchildren, what do five little children want? I don’t even know how old they are but by the way Mrs Burke describes them I am pretty sure that they are all younger than ten.

I know, while I am in town I can puck up a couple of games, because I know if I ask Mrs Burke what they would like, she would say not to get them anything and not tell me anything about them. Hopefully, they will like what I get them, if not I will take them to town myself and buy them something.

Smiling to myself, I open the door to the barn and greet all of the animals in there.

“Hey!” I breathe out. I know I am weird, I talk to animals but you would as well if you didn’t have many friends.
