"Mommy! Mommy!" My son said running through the front door. Two forty-seven, he had just got off the bus from school. The baby was napping so I hurried to the door when I heard him come in.
"Shhhh," I whispered, "Baby sister is asleep," I told him, "What it is Caleb? You have a good day at school?" I asked him taking his book bag off.
"Yes, ma'am. Look in my folder," he whispered to me. He was beaming from excitement.
I pulled his folder out and opened it. Inside was his behavior chart. He had done well today and had a smiley face marked. "Good job, Bubba!"
"Not thaaaat! This!" He said ripping the yellow flyer from his folder. "T-ball mommy! Can you sign me up? please? Please?" I took the flyer from him and examined the contents.
"We'll see, baby boy. Let me talk to Daddy about it," I said tucking the flyer away on the counter.
I went about my daily routine. Clean, cook, kids, clean, baths, story time, and then bed. Day in and day out, everything was the same. Mundane. I had been married to Chris for five years, be we were together two years prior to marrying. We got pregnant with Caleb and decided to tie the knot. Almost five years later, we had got a surprise- Abby. Caleb was now six years old and Abby hitting one.
Chris worked in sales for a big electronics corporation, which was a demanding yet high paying job. I couldn't complain, he provided well for us. We lived in a nice four bedroom home, in a nice quiet neighborhood. I was able to stay at home with the kids, which at first sounded grand, take a break from the stressful working world, but soon I grew bored.
With Chris' hours, we never saw each other. Which started to create a strain in our relationship. I just kept feeling like there was something more. You have a kid and get married and many things start to change. Things do not happen at your convenience anymore, it becomes all about the children and taking care of the home. Freedom then becomes a luxury.
At one time, Chris and I were on top of the world, without any precautions or worries holding us down or limiting us. But that begin to fizzle out after having Caleb. My body had changed tremendously after having kids. I was slightly overweight. I still wore my hair long, and its natural chestnut color. I use to be complimented often on my eyes, I mainly think because I use to be lively, but now to me they looked dead and empty. Not that I was all that ugly, but not being reminded that I was attractive was taking a toll on my self-esteem. We didn't have sex these days, hell I couldn't even remember what he looked like naked anymore. Not that I didn't want it, but after a while you just kind of give up trying and hinting around that you want to get laid.
After tucking the kids into bed, I glanced at the time. Eight seventeen. It would probably be a few hours before Caleb got home. I decided to have a glass of wine or two, in hopes of relaxing. The days felt long, due to the boredom in my life. Chris and I had moved from our little hometown to the big city for his job. We lived in a small neighborhood on the edge of the city and every day I hoped one of the neighbors would catch me outside and want to chit chat. But nobody seemed that social anymore. People rarely even came outside. soon I gave up on the hopes of meeting any of our neighbors. I poured my glass of wine and looked at the flyer for T-ball.
Hmmmm. T-ball. I thought. That may actually be a good idea. Maybe I could meet other lonely mommies. I laughed thinking about maybe starting a club after t-ball called The Lonely Mommies Club. Yea, I would probably be the only member. I checked the date on the flyer, Friday. The sign up and practice location was only two blocks away which made the perfect opportunity for me to walk off some of this baby fat, I was still struggling to lose. I marked the information on the calendar and was actually excited for once.
