Chapter 9- Confession Time

Start from the beginning

I suddenly remembered when Katsumi told me about how liking me wasn't a necessity. Does she think of me as stuffed bunny? "Since then," Mrs. Tsukino continued. "I think she kept killing off her desires and feelings. Also, she doesn't know how to express her desires and feelings well. If anything, she probably overcomplicates things. You heard that she missed school because she was ill, right?" I nodded my head. "The truth is, she got better by the beginning of her second year, but kept pretending."

"Why?" I asked.

"To see her parents cooperating and staying together for a bit longer," she replied. Even though she had a kind smile on her face, I couldn't help but think that it was just a mask to hide her stress and worry. "I'm still going to continue the divorce. Katsumi has accepted that. That's why she decided to go to school. What I'm worried about is... Well, since she got rid of her feelings, everything must seem boring to her. When she started talking about Class E and the interesting people there, I was relieved, but also worried. What if she tries to- ." "That's not going to happen," I assured her. Mrs. Tsukino looked at me for an explanation. "I will make sure that starts to go after what she wants and fights for what she wants. That overly complicated and boring ideology of hers, I will kill it." I slashed my thumb across my neck.

After a moment's silence, Mrs. Tsukino simply said, "Thank you." I returned her kind smile. Mrs. Tsukino had to go back to work and took her knife holder with her. At the door she called out, "Karma-kun." I looked at her while setting the first aid kit down next to Katsumi. "Do you like sunrises?" she asked. Unsure of why she suddenly asked that, I just answered, "Sure." Mrs. Tsukino gave me a warm smile. "If Katsumi's injuries are really serious, do me a favor and take her to the hospital," I was about to respond when she said, "Also, if you do anything weird to her, I will make sure that you'll never see the sun rise again. That doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be sleeping for eternity either." She giggled and I chuckled with her innocently. "Then, take care of Katsumi!" Mrs. Tsukino waved goodbye and left.

I went over to Katsumi and sat down next her. She's cute when she's sleeping. I moved some strands of her hair away from her face. My fingers lightly traced her purple cheek, when she started to wake up. "Sorry, did I wake you up?" Her eyes opened slowly.

"Obviously..." she said lightly. I helped her sit up and awkwardly removed my arms from her shoulders. My mind started to go blank. Right now, this delicate and weak state of hers, makes me uneasy. It's as if with one simple tease, one simple touch, she'll break. That's why, right now, I can only pretend to be composed. "Karma," Katsumi called out.

"Yeah?" I answered absentmindedly.

"Thanks," she said. I didn't know what to say. To be honest, I don't think I did anything that great.

"You don't have to thank me," I replied. "It's not like I protected you well anyway."

"Yeah, but you came," she insisted. "That's good enough for me." With a sly smile, I leaned in close to her face.

"Really?" I asked. Her widened eyes were glued to me. Immediately, I pulled back, but then she released a frustrated sigh.

"I'm not that weak you know," she said. I turned to her with a surprised expression. "If anything, I'd probably be more comfortable if you acted like yourself... You know, teasing, instigating..."

"Is that the only thing that comes to your mind when you think of me?" I asked, with a playfulness returning to my voice. She stared at me blankly for a second, and then blinked a few times.

"Violent, sadistic..." she continued. "And nice."

"Nice?" I raised an eyebrow.

Katsumi nodded her head. "Yeah. You're actually a nice and good person. Also, unlike me, you're actually a hard worker." Why does she sound more surprised then me?  We stared at each other for a long time. I'm not sure if what she says it's true, but I can tell that she's being serious right now. Katsumi's eyes lowered to my hands. She started to take off her tie, flustering me a bit. "What are you-?"

"Your hands are bit bloody." Katsumi started to wrap her tie around my right hand, covering the blood on my knuckles. Now that her tie was gone, her shirt revealed a bit more of her pale skin. Even though she had her usual camisole on, I looked away out of discomfort... I mean courtesy.

"It's fine, if anything shouldn't you worry about your own injuries?" I asked.

"Yeah, I guess you're right." She started to unbutton her shirt.

"Do you really think that's a good idea?" I asked with a forced smile. "Hey," Katsumi called out. You're ignoring me?! "Can you help me get this off." Mrs. Tsukino, it seems that Katsumi is the one trying to do something weird.

"Alright," I replied in a calm voice. Slowly, I started to pull her shirt off her shoulders, revealing the terrible cut on her right back arm. "Don't you think you should go to the hospital?" She thought about it for a moment before answering.

"If I go now, he'll probably there. Plus, there's medical bills to worry about."

"... I think that you don't have to worry about that," I told her. She raised an eyebrow at me. I took an ace bandage and started to treat her wound. "I will stay with you, so that guy won't be able to bother you. As for the medical bills, as long you're fine, I don't think it's something to worry about," I explained carefully. She didn't flinch from the pain even once.

"Really? Then, I'll go later. Right now, I want to talk to you for a bit," she said. Eh? "Actually I have something to confess. One of the reasons I started this contest was to get you to hate me," she said with a stoic expression. I gave her a slight smile.

"I already knew."

"Really?" she asked.

"Lately you've been saying things you don't mean and it looked like you've been forcing yourself. Also, just to clear any misunderstandings, that one comment you made about love, I think that it's because you really want to be in love, right?" She stayed silent and gazed at me with her soft blue eyes.

"Yeah, probably," she replied with a simple nod. "Well since you already know, it makes things easier for me to explain. I'm sorry. It was wrong of me to try to get you to hate me. Up until now, I never considered-." I kissed her. At first she was tense and tried to move away, but I placed my hand behind her head. Then she relaxed and kept letting me kiss her. I pulled back a bit and stared into her eyes.

"Consider it now," I said. "I love you." Before she was able to say anything, I continued. "There's no chance that I'll be able to hate you. No matter what you do, you're still you. I'll keep doing as I please and love you. If you don't like that, then make me stop. But, even if you try to kill me, I'll still love you." Even though the ends of my lips were curved up, I felt a bit uneasy. Katsumi wore a very surprised and startled expression. It was as if she was seeing something, she never saw before.

"Why? Isn't it hard for you?" she asked. This time, I was startled. It looked like she was about to break down. "If you don't want to deal with it then don't. Why are you working so hard? If it's not working out for you, then give up!" "If I give up?" I said, silencing her. "Then everything I've done until now would be pointless, right?" Katsumi didn't say anything. She couldn't say anything. "Don't you think it's about time you stopped being stubborn?" I asked with a pseudo-playful tone.

"..." She shyly and very cautiously nodded her head. "Alright." A gentle smile appeared on her face. "I'll stop being stubborn." I smiled too. Not the usual smile I always wear, but something a bit different.

"Then I guess the winner for the contest has been decided."

"Huh? What are you talking about?" she asked. Eh?

"Aren't you..." My voice was a bit stiff. "Going to stop being stubborn?"

"Yeah, but that doesn't mean that I chose you. It just means that I'm actually going to consider you," Katsumi responded apathetically. What have you been doing all this time (not considering me)? "Also, entertaining me and liking me or two different things," she explained placidly. I felt blood lust building up inside of me. "Oh my, did you misunderstand again? I'm starting to get worried that you'll keep making a fool of yourself." There was a familiar sly taunt in her voice. I couldn't help but laugh. I took my hand and rubbed her head. Katsumi blushed a bit, surprised from the sudden act of affection.

"Don't worry," I told her. "I'll show who the real fool is."
