"Oh, is this the reason you got angry at me? I didn't even notice it flew off. I'm sorry." You frowned, taking out the letter from the envelope. You adjusted your grip on the dirty paper.
"It's a bit tattered at the moment. The writing's pretty smudged too because of the mud. Let me just..."
Squinting your eyes, you tried to read the letter. Levi screeched and snatched the paper from your hold.
Your tight hold on the paper lead it to tear. Both of you gasped.
You immediately loosened your grip, giving Levi the opportunity to snatch it completely.
"Wha-- Levi! I thought you wanted me to read it."
"No...! I--" His face grew red. After a few moments of him trying to get the words out his mouth, he let out a frustrated groan.
Much to your shock, Levi ripped the letter to shreds.
He then let the shredded pieces drop to the mud, stomping on it to bury it back under the mud.
You gaped at him silently.
"Look, you don't need to read it, okay? I...was wrong. Now's not the time yet."
"Not time for what?"
He averted his eyes from you, face growing redder by the second.
"I..."
"You...?" You furrowed your brows, still bewildered by the whole ordeal.
"I...think you're a really good friend of mine, okay? You...you make me really happy...And," he swallowed nervously.
"A-and you never judge me at all. And I never want to lose you, ever. So..." He breathed out. "...I hope we always... Stay together!"
The way you blinked twice to process his words made his anxiety grow.
The poor guy was trembling in the spot, looking as though he was one poke away from breaking down and crying. You however, remained oblivious from his state.
"...Aww. That's sweet. I think you're a great friend too. I'm not sure about the 'not time yet' thing you were referring to, but I'm happy you think so highly of me." You smiled at him, prompting his nerves to ease slightly.
Levi mentally released a sigh of relief. But at the same time, he felt a slight tinge in his heart.
"It really made me guilty to think I did something that would hurt you that bad, but I'm glad it's resolved. Let's play together later, okay?"
Flashing him one final smile, you turned around and walked off to wash your hands and your shoes. Or maybe just take a whole damn shower, you weren't sure.
Looking at your retreating back, Levi couldn't help but frown.
How much of a coward was he?
He had the perfect opportunity right there.
No one butting in.
No one there to ruin it.
...
But he feared your rejection.
And that was more than enough to scare him away from saying those three words.
He wasn't the best. Far from it, he'd always think.
He wasn't satisfied with your current relationship, but he was too much of a coward to do anything about it.
He directs his gaze back down to the dirty pastel indigo envelope that once decided whether his relationship with you would change.
Pressing his lips in a thin line, Leviathan crumples the damp paper and let it fall to the mud along with the torn letter.
Coward.
Mammon was right on the money when he said that.
