Chapter Twenty-seven: Serenade and Ice Creams

Start from the beginning

Jessica shakes her head as the chorus begins to play. Ace bangs his head and serenades his coworker. A customer comes in and pauses as he watches Ace dance around the store. Jessica walks around the counter, towards the customer as Ace dances after her, still lip syncing the song.

"Hi, welcome to Siren Records-"

Ace takes Jessica's hand into his and spins her around as the chorus begins to play again.

"I was made for lovin' you baby-"

Jessica pulls her hand out of his and pushes him away. She turns back to the customer. "As I was saying. Welcome to Siren Records. How can I help you today?"

"Do you have a bathroom in here?"

Jessica sighs. "The bathrooms are by the food court."

The man thanks her before walking out of the shop. Jessica turns around to find Ace right in front of her.

"Can you get enough of me?"  he belts out as the song comes to an end. Jessica rolls her eyes and walks back to the counter as Lets Get it On by Marvin Gaye begins to play.

"Did you change the playlist?"

"Well, Jessie-"

"It's Jessica, Ace. Jessica."

Ace holds his hands up. "Whoa. I sense some hostility toward me." Jessica takes a deep breath. "You know this week is my week to create the playlist." "And your taste in music is good...just not phenomenal." Jessica folds her arms as Ace continues. "I know what draws the customers into the store. I after all have been here since the shop opened-"

"Which opened a few weeks ago and did you forget, I started working here the same time as you." Ace holds up three fingers. "You started three days after me which means you still need to catch up on the customers' taste in music."

Jessica nods. "You're right, Ace. You know what I'll do." She walks around the counter and walks backwards to the door. "I'll go survey potential customers out there." Ace gives her two thumbs up. "That's the spirit! While you're at it, go to Scoops Ahoy and get me a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream with a side of Robin."

Jessica gives him a fake sweet smile. "Will do!" She turns around and walks out of the store, stepping foot into the lobby of the mall. She smiles, relieved to finally be out of there. She quickens her walk and before she knew it, she had arrived at Scoops Ahoy.

Jessica walks up to the counter and rings the bell. Robin turns around, a fake smile plastered on her lips. Her fake smile turns genuine when she sees Jessica. "Hi, Jess!"

"Hi Robin!"

"What ice cream flavor would you like today? Chocolate? Cookie dough or a scoop of Steve Harrington?" Jessica giggles. "Actually, could I have mint chocolate chip with a side of you?"

Robin's smiles falters. "It's Ace's order, isn't it?"

Jessica nods. "Yep." She leans against the counter. "I hate him. Why can't I have a cool coworker like you?" Robin laughs and shakes her head. "When is he going to realize that I don't like him?" Jessica tilts her head, pretending to think. "Uh...never. His head is full of dope at this point with how much weed he smokes a day." The two girls laugh.

Hearing his girl's laugh, Steve pushes the doors open and walks out of the backroom. "Jess!"

Jessica looks over at Steve and gives him a loving smile.

"Hi-Whoa!" Steve grabs Jessica's hand, leading her into the backroom. "I'm taking my break now, Robin!" "You only get five minutes, dingus!" The doors close behind Jessica as Steve pulls her into the backroom. He instantly closes the gap between the two.
